Hyundai Recalls Over 226,000 Vehicles For Rearview Camera Issue

Hyundai Motor America has initiated a major voluntary safety recall affecting 226,118 vehicles due to non compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which pertains to rear visibility.

This recall involves vehicles produced between September 2020 and March 2022 at various manufacturing plants, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and Hyundai Motor Company.

The rearview camera equipped in the involved vehicles may have been produced with insufficient solder joints on the camera’s printed circuit board (“PCB”), which may worsen over time increasing the risk of camera failure during operation. An inoperative rearview camera will reduce rearward visibility while driving in reverse, increasing the risk of injury to bystanders.

An obstructed or failed rearview camera can increase the risk of accidents, particularly when reversing, by reducing visibility. Despite the defect, Hyundai has reported no specific warnings or indicators that may alert drivers to the issue before the camera fails.

All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for replacement of the rearview camera. This remedy will be offered at no cost to owners for all affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Additionally, Hyundai will provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.
