There is a very specific dilemma that comes with buying an expensive performance car. You want something fast, exciting and dramatic to drive, but then reality sets in. You need space for the family, a comfortable cabin, a usable boot and something that can deal with everyday driving without making every journey an event. That is where performance SUVs have found their place. And few cars demonstrate this idea better than the Audi RS Q8.
At first glance, the RS Q8 looks like a Q8 that has been given a particularly aggressive makeover. Look closer, though, and there is considerably more going on underneath. This is Audi Sport's take on a large luxury SUV, and it gets the sort of hardware that would not look out of place in a much more focused performance car.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Design: Aggressive Looks With SUV Proportions

The standard Q8 already has a fairly distinctive road presence, but the RS Q8 takes things several steps further. The large honeycomb grille, aggressive bumpers, sporty detailing and RS-specific elements immediately tell you that this is not a regular luxury SUV.
The 23-inch alloy wheels fill out the arches nicely, while the frameless windows and sloping roofline give the RS Q8 a much more sporting silhouette than its dimensions would suggest. LED lighting signatures add to the visual drama, while the integrated spoiler and a broad stance make the SUV look fast even when it is standing still.
What makes the design particularly interesting is how well Audi has managed to combine two very different identities. It has the visual aggression you expect from an RS model, but it remains recognisably an SUV. You still get the high seating position, substantial road presence and sense of space that make SUVs so popular.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Performance: 640 PS Of V8 Power

The real reason that makes the RS Q8 special, however, is under the bonnet. Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 developing 640 PS and 850 Nm. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system.
The numbers alone give you an idea of what to expect, but the way the RS Q8 delivers its performance is arguably even more impressive. There is a sense of effortlessness to the way it gathers speed. You don't need to work the engine hard or wait for the revs to build; press the accelerator and the V8 responds with an immediate surge of performance.
It is the kind of acceleration that can make you forget just how large and heavy the vehicle is. The engine's enormous reserve of torque means overtaking is almost ridiculously easy. There is so much performance available that you need to exercise restraint rather than search for more power.
The RS Q8 also doesn't feel like it is constantly trying to remind you that it is a performance SUV. In the more relaxed drive modes, it can settle down and behave like a comfortable luxury SUV. Switch to the sportier settings, however, and its character changes considerably.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Driving Experience: Surprisingly Agile For Its Size

This is where the RS Q8 really earns its RS badge. A large SUV should, by conventional logic, feel cumbersome when driven enthusiastically. The RS Q8 manages to defy that expectation to a considerable degree.
Its adaptive air suspension allows the character of the car to be altered depending on the driving conditions. In its more relaxed settings, the suspension prioritises comfort, while the sportier modes lower the vehicle and sharpen its responses.
The multiple drive modes also alter parameters such as steering, engine response, and transmission behaviour. There are efficient and comfort-oriented settings for everyday driving, along with Dynamic and configurable RS modes when you want to explore what the car can really do.
Take it into a series of corners and the RS Q8's composure is particularly impressive. Body movements are kept remarkably well controlled for a vehicle of this size, giving the driver confidence to carry more speed than you might initially expect.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Interior: Luxury Meets RS Sportiness

Inside, the RS Q8 combines Audi's familiar approach to premium interiors with enough RS-specific detailing to remind you that this isn't an ordinary Q8. Leather upholstery, contrast stitching and RS badging bring some of the exterior's aggression into the cabin. The overall ambience remains sophisticated, though, rather than becoming excessively sporty. That is important because the RS Q8's appeal isn't just about the person behind the wheel.
There is plenty of room for passengers, and features such as four-zone climate control ensure that those sitting in the rear aren't simply along for the ride. Multiple charging options also make the cabin better suited to modern family use.
This is one of the biggest strengths of the RS Q8. It doesn't force you to choose between performance and passenger comfort.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Features And Practicality: More Than Just A Performance SUV

For all the talk of performance, the RS Q8 remains an SUV, and that brings some obvious advantages. The cabin has enough space for occupants to travel comfortably, while the boot is large enough to make the car useful beyond weekend drives and spirited blasts. The powered tailgate is another small but useful touch. What’s more, the car can be lowered at the touch of a button to make loading and unloading luggage easier. This is particularly useful when you're dealing with heavier bags.
The RS Q8 therefore doesn't require you to make the usual compromises associated with a sports car. You can take the family along, carry luggage and use it as a daily luxury SUV, before switching into a more aggressive driving mode when the road opens up.

Audi RS Q8 Review - Verdict: Supercar Performance With SUV Practicality

The Audi RS Q8 is an impressive demonstration of just how far performance SUVs have come. It has the visual drama of a sports car, the performance of something much more focused and the practicality of a luxury SUV. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 provides effortless and exhilarating performance, while the adaptive air suspension and sophisticated chassis ensure that the RS Q8 doesn't feel completely out of its depth when the road starts getting interesting.
Yet, it can also be comfortable, spacious and easy to live with. That dual personality is ultimately the RS Q8's biggest strength. You don't have to choose between a fast car and a family-friendly SUV because Audi has attempted to give you both in the same package. What makes the RS Q8 even more interesting is its connection to the Lamborghini Urus. The two share their underlying platform and a substantial amount of mechanical technology, yet the Audi is positioned at a significantly lower price. With the RS Q8 priced at around Rs 2.38 crore (ex-showroom) compared to approximately Rs 4.22 crore (ex-showroom) for the Urus, the Audi makes a strong argument for itself on the value front.
Of course, buyers at this level aren't necessarily making decisions based purely on specifications or price. The Urus brings greater theatre, a more exotic design and the cachet of the Lamborghini badge. But if the question is how much performance, luxury and technology you can get for your money, the RS Q8 makes a very compelling case. For someone who wants supercar thrills but simply cannot give up the practicality of an SUV, the Audi RS Q8 gets remarkably close to offering the best of both worlds.
