The national capital Delhi and its surrounding areas are usually on the tip of the spear as they battle severe air pollution in winter every year. A recent update from Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) notifies the implementation of Stage-3 GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) norms in Delhi NCR. This authoritarian body has come out with this notification as the capital as its nearby areas battle severe pollution with the AQI levels crossing the 400 level mark. With this the ban on plying of BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel cars also comes into effect from tomorrow morning. So if you have a petrol car then do check if your car is BS3 before heading out from tomorrow and if you own a diesel car then do check if your car is BS4 before heading out. Usage of BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel cars after the implementation of GRAP-3 can attract heavy fines.
So if you are wondering if your car is affected by this or not we have simplified the way to check this. The BS4 petrol norms were implemented in early 2010 in Delhi. So if you have a petrol car that is registered in Delhi in 2010 or before then do check for the emission norms it is registered in. However BS4 norms were implemented in the NCR region and other parts of the country at a later date so if your petrol car is registered outside Delhi then do check for the emission norms it is registered in.
However, when it comes to diesel cars the matter is far more simple as nationwide BS4 was phased out on March 31st 2020 and BS6 was implemented on April 1st 2020. So if your diesel car is registered before this date then it is a BS4 diesel car and you cannot drive it in the Delhi NCR region until GRAP Stage-3 measures are revoked.
The implementation of GRAP Stage-3 doesn’t just affect passenger vehicles but also commercial vehicles. Under this there will be restrictions on the plying of inter-state buses as well. This will restrict the plying of non-CNG, non-electric and non-BS6 diesel buses in Delhi NCR.
