New-Gen BMW X5, iX5 Unveiled Globally With Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, Electric and Hydrogen Powertrains

BMW has taken the wraps off the fifth-generation X5, marking a major transformation for its popular luxury SUV. The new-generation model arrives with a wider choice of powertrains than ever before, offering everything from traditional petrol and diesel engines to a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric iX5 and even a hydrogen fuel-cell version for select international markets.
Key Highlights:
  • Fifth-generation BMW X5 unveiled globally
  • Offered with petrol, diesel, hybrid, EV and hydrogen powertrain options
  • New digital cabin with BMW Panoramic Vision display
  • Electric iX5 expected with around 578 hp output
  • India launch expected around 2027
The SUV combines the brand’s familiar performance-focused approach with new-age technology, sustainable materials, and an advanced digital cabin.
The biggest design change is the introduction of new X-shaped LED headlights, featuring twin X-inspired lighting elements on both sides of the front fascia. These are linked to the signature kidney grille through slim horizontal light strips, giving the SUV a more futuristic appearance.
The updated design also focuses on improved aerodynamics and efficiency. Key exterior changes include flush-fitting door handles, sharper body lines, new LED lighting signatures, and larger alloy wheel options going up to 23 inches.
The SUV also gets a longer wheelbase, which is expected to improve rear-seat space and overall cabin comfort.

Feature-Rich Cabin With New Digital Technology

Inside the cabin, the new BMW X5 receives a major redesign with a stronger focus on luxury, digital connectivity and a modern user experience. The SUV features BMW’s latest-generation interface, bringing a cleaner dashboard layout with reduced physical controls and a more technology-focused design.
Key highlights include the new BMW Panoramic Vision display, a large central touchscreen infotainment system, the latest BMW Operating System X and an AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
Buyers can also opt for a dedicated front passenger display, while the cabin gets sustainable premium materials, upgraded ambient lighting and enhanced connected features for a more advanced and comfortable driving experience.
BMW says the new interior has been designed to offer a more intuitive experience while maintaining the premium feel expected from the X5.

BMW X5 To Offer Five Different Powertrain Options

One of the biggest talking points of the new X5 is its wide range of engine choices. Unlike many premium SUVs moving completely towards electrification, BMW will continue offering internal combustion engines alongside electric technology.
The global lineup will include:
  • Turbo-petrol engines
  • Turbo-diesel engines
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version
  • Fully electric BMW iX5
  • Hydrogen fuel-cell model for select markets
With this approach, the X5 becomes one of the few luxury SUVs offering multiple propulsion technologies under a single model family.
The fully electric BMW iX5 is expected to be one of the most important versions in the new lineup. It will use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and is expected to deliver around 578 hp.
The upcoming electric version of the BMW X5 is expected to bring a high-performance electric drivetrain along with advanced charging technology. The SUV is likely to feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing around 578 hp, offering strong performance and improved traction. It is also expected to come with an 800V electrical architecture, enabling faster charging capabilities through DC fast-charging support.
According to BMW estimates, the electric X5 could deliver a range of up to approximately 700 km on a single charge, making it suitable for long-distance travel.
The new 800V system is expected to significantly improve charging speeds, making the iX5 more practical for long-distance driving.

Plug-In Hybrid Version Gets More Powerful

BMW has also upgraded the X5 plug-in hybrid model with a larger battery pack and improved electric driving capability.
The updated PHEV version is expected to offer:
  • Around 483 hp combined output
  • Faster acceleration
  • Increased electric-only range
  • Better efficiency for daily commuting
This makes the hybrid version a suitable option for buyers looking for lower emissions without completely moving to an electric vehicle.

Sustainability Gets More Focus

BMW has increased its focus on sustainability with the new X5. The company says the SUV uses more recycled materials and benefits from production methods designed to reduce carbon emissions.
The manufacturing process also makes greater use of renewable energy, supporting BMW’s broader goal of reducing its environmental impact.

New BMW X5 India Launch Expected In 2027

BMW India has not yet confirmed the launch timeline of the fifth-generation X5 for the Indian market. However, considering BMW’s global rollout plans, the new luxury SUV is expected to arrive in India around 2027.
The exact engine and powertrain options for India are yet to be announced, but the market is likely to receive a combination of petrol, diesel, and electrified variants.
