MG Motor India to Unveil a New Energy Vehicle on July 16; Likely to be a Plug-in Hybrid SUV
- MG Motor India will introduce a new energy vehicle in the country on July 16 2026.
- This upcoming product could be a plug-in hybrid SUV.
- The upcoming MG could boast a electric-only range of 100-125 km.
The Indian division of the British legacy automaker MG Motor has confirmed that it will introduce a new energy vehicle in the country on July 16th 2026. This will mark MG’s entry into the plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) segment. While the company has not disclosed the model name, industry indications suggest the upcoming SUV could be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in international markets.
The upcoming model is expected to become MG’s first plug-in hybrid offering for the Indian market. The announcement comes as the automaker expands its new energy vehicle portfolio beyond battery electric vehicles, which currently includes models such as the Comet EV and Windsor EV.
The SUV has already been spotted undergoing road tests in India, while a design patent filed earlier this year further strengthened speculation about its launch plans. The patent images indicate that the vehicle could be rebadged and sold under the MG brand.
Internationally, the Wuling Starlight 560 is offered as a three-row SUV and measures 4,745 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,810 mm. The model features an upright stance, a tall bonnet, prominent wheel arches, black body cladding, roof rails and LED lighting elements at both ends.
The front-end design differs between the hybrid and electric versions. While the plug-in hybrid gets a large grille, the fully electric model adopts a closed-off fascia. Other styling highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof-mounted spoiler and wraparound tail lamps.
Inside, the SUV follows a clean dashboard design with limited physical controls. Global-spec versions are equipped with a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster.
Other features available overseas include powered and ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, panoramic sunroof, connected car technology and a six-speaker audio system. Safety equipment is expected to include six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic parking brake and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
The international-spec plug-in hybrid version uses a 1.5L petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack. The setup develops close to 197bhp and 230Nm of torque. It is claimed to offer an electric-only driving range of around 100 to 125 km, while the combined driving range exceeds 1,000 km on a full tank and battery charge.
MG could also introduce a fully electric derivative at a later stage. Overseas, the EV version is available with battery packs ranging from 56.7 kWh to 69.2 kWh and offers a claimed driving range of up to 530 km, depending on the specification.
