Ola Electric Files Patent for Small Electric Hatchback

Ola Electric has filed a patent for a compact electric hatchback, marking a renewed focus on its passenger vehicle plans. The design indicates a five-door city car intended for urban use, likely to compete with small EVs such as the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV.

Ola Electric, which had earlier paused its electric car programme to concentrate on expanding its electric scooter lineup, appears to be revisiting its passenger car ambitions. Recent filings show that the company has submitted a patent for a small electric car design in India.
This development follows the company’s Sankalp 2025 event, where Ola presented its Gen 4 modular platform. The new architecture has been designed to support multiple vehicle categories that includes scooters, three-wheelers and compact four-wheelers. It aims to create a shared technology base across different products, allowing common components and faster scalability.

Patent Drawing

As per the sketch submitted to the patent agency, the electric car features a compact, tall-boy hatchback design with a five-door layout: two doors on each side and a rear hatch. This configuration could offer easier passenger access compared to some two-door micro EVs currently available in India.
The vehicle’s proportions indicate an emphasis on maximising cabin space within a small footprint. The front overhang is notably short, which suggests better interior packaging. A full-width element across the front, possibly for LED lighting or daytime running lamps, is visible in the drawings.
From the side, the car has a box-shaped silhouette with a flat roofline and upright stance. The windshield appears moderately raked and the wheels are placed close to the edges, hinting at a relatively long wheelbase for its size.

Positioning in the Market

The patent images suggest that this Ola car will be positioned somewhere in the compact electric vehicle segment and is expected to compete against MG ZS EV, Tata Tiago EV and VinFast Minio Green (recently patented in India).
While the patent documents do not disclose technical specifications, Ola is likely to integrate its locally developed 4680-series battery cells, unveiled at the Sankalp 2025 event.
