Yamaha R2 vs R2 M Variant Comparison: What’s Different?

Yamaha has launched the YZF-R2 with three variants aimed at buyers looking for different levels of equipment and styling. While the base version focuses on the essentials, the higher variants add features such as a bidirectional quick shifter, while the top-spec YZF-R2 M gets additional hardware and cosmetic upgrades. Here is a closer look at what sets the Yamaha YZF-R2 and YZF-R2 M apart.

Yamaha YZF-R2 vs YZF-R2 M: Price

The Yamaha YZF-R2 range starts at Rs 2,30,500 for the base variant, which is offered in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray colours. The second variant is priced at Rs 2,39,500 and adds a third-generation bi-directional quick shifter. It is available in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue.
At the top of the range is the Yamaha YZF-R2 M, priced at Rs 2,53,000 (all prices, ex-showroom). It is offered exclusively in Metallic Gray.

Yamaha YZF-R2 vs YZF-R2 M: Dimensions

The dimensions of the Yamaha YZF-R2 remain unchanged across the variants. The motorcycle measures 1,980mm in length, 700mm in width and 1,140mm in height, while the wheelbase stands at 1,340mm.
The bike has a seat height of 810mm, ground clearance of 170mm and a 12-litre fuel tank. The standard YZF-R2 weighs 149kg, while the YZF-R2 M tips the scales at 150kg.

Yamaha YZF-R2 vs YZF-R2 M: Engine and Performance

There are no mechanical changes between the different Yamaha YZF-R2 variants. All versions are powered by the same 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 26.1bhp and 19.1Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox and comes with a slip-and-assist clutch as standard. This means buyers choosing the higher-spec YZF-R2 M get additional features and equipment, but no increase in power or performance over the standard R2.

Yamaha YZF-R2 vs YZF-R2 M: Features

The standard Yamaha YZF-R2 comes with a TFT instrument console with smartphone connectivity. It also gets traction control, dual-channel ABS and an assist & slip clutch as standard.
The second variant adds Yamaha's third-generation bi-directional quick shifter, which the company describes as a segment-first feature. The system allows the rider to make both upshifts and downshifts without using the clutch, adding to the bike's sporty riding experience.
The YZF-R2 M gets the same quick shifter along with a longer list of additional equipment. It comes with a Smart Key System, adjustable front forks, an adjustable rear shock absorber, adjustable clutch and brake levers and a front fork top cap.

Yamaha YZF-R2 M Gets Exclusive Cosmetic Upgrades

The top-spec YZF-R2 M also stands apart from the regular versions with several visual and finish-related upgrades. It gets a faux suede-finished seat, a 3D embossed YZF-R2 M emblem, a silver-finished swingarm and a shot-blasted muffler end cap.
These additions give the R2 M a more premium appearance while also helping differentiate it from the other variants in the lineup.

Yamaha YZF-R2 vs YZF-R2 M: Suspension and Brakes

The Yamaha YZF-R2 uses an inverted telescopic front fork and a monoshock at the rear. The standard versions get a conventional setup, while the range-topping R2 M benefits from adjustable front forks and an adjustable rear shock absorber.
The motorcycle rides on 17-inch wheels and gets disc brakes at both ends. Dual-channel ABS and traction control are offered as standard across the range.
