Environment Ministry Assesses Ghaziabad and Noida Air Pollution Strategies, Sets Strict Compliance Targets

Environment Ministry Assesses Ghaziabad and Noida Air Pollution Strategies, Sets Strict Compliance Targets
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the air pollution action plans of Ghaziabad and Noida. Senior officials from both cities presented updates on measures taken to manage vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, waste handling, public transport and greening initiatives.
Directions on Industrial Emissions
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) briefed the Minister on the installation of Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) in pending industrial units. The Minister reiterated that the 31 December 2025 deadline must be met and that non-compliant units will face action. CPCB and State Pollution Control Boards were asked to inspect polluting units in peri-urban areas and address violations.
Call for Stronger Public Participation and Updated Frameworks
The Minister asked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to refine parameters used to track city-level performance and prepare a consolidated review for the entire NCR. He also called for updating National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) criteria to allow more efficient allocation of funds. Public involvement was emphasised as a key part of implementing air quality measures and greening activities.
Greening and Waste Management Suggestions
Municipal bodies were advised to work with Forest Departments to plant indigenous, heat-resistant species requiring less water. The Minister also sought coordinated waste management plans to avoid duplication of efforts among different agencies. CAQM was asked to develop a Standard Operating Procedure for using urban open spaces for greening.
Focus on Public Transport and Future Urban Planning
The Minister recommended a study to identify major traffic corridors in Delhi-NCR, followed by improving end-to-end public transport on those routes. Municipal authorities were asked to prepare for future waste volumes by identifying suitable processing sites in advance.
