FASTag Accounts for Over 98 percent of Toll Collection on National Highways: MoRTH

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has stated that over 98 percent of user fees on National Highways are currently collected through FASTag, the electronic toll collection system. As of December 2025, a total of 11.86 crore FASTags had been issued across the country.

Annual Pass Usage on Highways

The ministry also shared details of Annual Passes introduced under the National Highway Fee Rules, 2008. Since their launch on 15 August 2025, around 42 lakh Annual Passes have been activated. These passes accounted for more than 19 crore toll transactions by 31 December 2025. Around 25 percent of non-commercial vehicles using FASTag are currently transacting through these Annual Passes.

Daily Toll Collection and Transactions

Average daily toll collection through FASTag on National Highway fee plazas stands at around Rs 186 crore. The system processes approximately 105 lakh electronic toll transactions per day during the financial year 2025–26, up to December 2025.

Time Taken at Toll Plazas

An impact assessment of the National Electronic Toll Collection programme showed a reduction in waiting time at toll plazas. Vehicles using electronic toll collection take about 40 seconds to cross a fee plaza, compared to over 12 minutes under the earlier manual toll system.

Plans for Barrier-less Tolling

The ministry has invited and finalised Requests for Proposal for implementing barrier-less tolling at select fee plazas. These projects are expected to be reviewed before extending the system to other locations in a phased manner.
