With the introduction of this accessibility feature the company has further expanded its appeal in the mass-market passenger vehicle segment. The WagonR with swivel seat was first showcased back in 2008 at the Indian Auto Expo. Apart from Maruti Suzuki, Toyota had also introduced the swivel and slide front passenger seat in the Corolla Altis with dealer end retrofitting in India back in 2012 for an amount of Rs 30,000. The Maruti Suzuki swivel seat has finally made its way into the Indian market, 17 years after it was first showcased in the country, however the company hasn't shared the pricing for the same yet.
The information shared by the company outlines that the WagonR swivel seat has been launched as a pilot project across 11 cities in India and is currently being offered at over 200 Maruti Suzuki Arena dealerships. Shedding light on this subject the automaker has stated that based on customer feedback and demand the scope of this project will be further expanded. Interested customers can now opt for the swivel seat as a retrofit kit, which can be installed either in a new WagonR or retrofitted in existing WagonR models sold after 2019.
According to the company the swivel seat for the WagonR is designed to rotate outward, allowing easier ingress and egress, especially for occupants with limited mobility. Maruti Suzuki has stated that this system does not require replacement of the original OEM seat and can be installed in around one hour, without altering the vehicle’s structure or core functioning. This kit is also being offered with a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. The swivel seat kit has also undergone testing at the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and complies with the applicable safety standards.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Swivel seat will make daily travel more convenient for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. WagonR is among the top 10 selling models* in India and is ideal to offer this accessibility feature to a wider audience. This initiative reflects our vision of inclusive mobility and reinforces our commitment to customer-focused solutions that empower people with dignity, independence, and confidence in their everyday journeys. It fully aligns with our motto to deliver ‘Joy of Mobility’ to as many people as possible.”
