Nissan To Increase Green Steel Use Fivefold By FY2025
Nissan Motor has announced plans to significantly increase its use of low-CO₂ emission steel in Japan, aiming for a fivefold rise by fiscal year 2025 compared to fiscal year 2023. This initiative aligns with Nissan's broader environmental goals of reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% across the entire product lifecycle by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Nissan To Increase Green Steel Use Fivefold By FY2025
Nissan plans to significantly increase its use of low-CO2-emission steel in Japan in fiscal year 2025. This represents a five-fold increase compared to fiscal year 2023. The move is part of the company's efforts to reduce CO2 emissions throughout its vehicle production and lifecycle.
Impact of Steel on Vehicle Emissions
Steel components make up a large portion (approximately 60%) of a vehicle's weight. Using low-CO2-emission steel can significantly lower overall vehicle emissions. A major source of CO2 in steel production is the process of reducing iron ore in blast furnaces. Green steel production methods aim to reduce these emissions. These methods include using low-carbon-reduced iron or switching to electric arc furnaces.
Nissan aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% throughout the entire product life cycle (Includes raw material extraction, manufacturing, use, and the recycling or reuse of end-of-life vehicles) by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To reach these goals, the company has stepped up its efforts towards decarbonization in the entire process spanning from material procurement.
Sourcing Low-Emission Steel
Nissan began using green steel in its Japanese market vehicles in 2023, starting with Kobenable Steel from Kobe Steel. The company will expand its use of low-emission steel by incorporating products such as Nippon Steel Corporation's NSCarbolex Neutral, JFE Steel Corporation's JGreeX, and POSCO's carbon reduction allocated steel. These products use a mass-balance approach to reduce CO2 emissions during the steel production process.
