PM Modi Reaches Red Fort in Range Rover Sentinel on Independence Day 2026: Why is This Armoured SUV the Preferred Choice?

The Range Rover Sentinel is not a regular luxury SUV. It is a specially armoured version developed for high-security requirements, with substantial changes made to the vehicle's body, glazing, chassis and running gear. The SUV has also been a part of the Prime Minister's convoy during previous Independence Day appearances at the Red Fort.

The Range Rover Sentinel is based on the Range Rover and is designed around occupant protection rather than conventional luxury SUV requirements. Its protection cell uses armour and multi-layered ballistic glass, while the vehicle's suspension, chassis and tyres are adapted to deal with the additional weight. The SUV retains the familiar Range Rover design, but the protection equipment adds considerable weight compared with a standard Range Rover. The vehicle seen in the Prime Minister's convoy has also been equipped with features intended for high-security operations.

The Range Rover Sentinel has been seen with PM Modi for several years, including during Independence Day ceremonies. The vehicle continues to be relevant to the Prime Minister's security requirements in 2026. In May this year, reports also highlighted a reduction in the size of the Prime Minister's convoy, with the Range Rover Sentinel and a Toyota Fortuner forming the core of the reported two-SUV arrangement.

The Range Rover Sentinel is not sold in India as a regular showroom model. The vehicle used for high-security duties is specially configured and armoured, making comparisons with the price of a standard Range Rover inappropriate. We estimated the cost of the Sentinel used by the PMO should be over Rs 10 crore. However, the exact current value of the vehicle used by the Prime Minister has not been officially disclosed.

The Range Rover Sentinel used by the Prime Minister has previously been reported with a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine. The power output is around 375-380 bhp, while the SUV can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in approximately 10.4 seconds despite its armoured construction and weight of more than 4.4 tonnes.

The focus, however, is not outright performance. The powertrain is required to move a significantly heavier vehicle while maintaining the performance and reliability expected from a high-security vehicle.

Security is the primary reason behind the Sentinel's presence in the Prime Minister's convoy. The vehicle features a certified protection cell, armoured glazing and reinforced body sections designed to provide protection against ballistic and blast threats.

It also uses run-flat all-terrain tyres. These allow the vehicle to continue moving for a limited distance even after a tyre loses pressure, an important requirement for a vehicle used in high-security movements.

Other equipment includes provisions for emergency lighting and sirens, along with a public-address system. The driver's window can also be lowered by around 150 mm for document exchange without opening the door.
