Chinese SVH Tundar Pickup Truck Is A Cheap Toyota Tundra Knockoff
Chinese automaker SVH’s Tundar compact pickup has a stark resemblance to the Toyota Tundra. Featuring a scaled-down design, 13-inch wheels, and a modest 1.0L engine, it lacks off-road capabilities and utility. Its lightweight build suggests it lacks the toughness associated with traditional pickup trucks. Given China’s history of loose copyright enforcement, this isn’t the first instance of a local automaker producing designs resembling global models.
Chinese SVH Tundar Pickup Truck Is A Cheap Toyota Tundra Knockoff
China has the second biggest automobile market in the world with the presence of many major global automakers. However the indigenous carmakers in China are infamous for making cars which sometimes have a stark resemblance to significant models from well known automakers.
Well some of these cars and their design are quite stunning and the cars are quite capable as well but there have been occasions when these models don’t even come close to the iconic cars with which they are trying to mimic. One such fine example of this is the Chinese automaker SVH (Sino Vehicle Hub) which had introduced its pickup truck called the Tundar, a vehicle that bears striking similarities to Toyota ’s iconic Tundra, albeit on a much smaller and less capable scale. The Tundar’s design and proportions highlight a trend in China’s auto industry, where manufacturers have often been accused of mimicking global models. For now, the Tundar is a reminder of the challenges posed by design imitation in the global auto industry.
Design & Features
The SVH Tundar’s front fascia features an oversized grille and headlights that closely resemble the Toyota Tundra, but the similarities stop there. Its compact dimensions and upright windshield give it an unconventional appearance. The truck rides on small 13-inch wheels, which, combined with limited ground clearance, make it unsuitable for rugged terrains or heavy-duty tasks. It seems like a pint sized toy imitation of the Tundra which has actually come to life.
Interestingly, the tailgate is embossed with the word ‘Tundra’ underscoring its inspiration. However, the Tundar’s load bay is small and features intrusions from wheel wells, making it more comparable to the trunk of an SUV than a pickup bed.
Engine & Performance
Powering the SVH Tundar is a modest 1.0L, 3-cylinder engine. This engine delivers power to the front wheels, limiting the vehicle’s off-road capability. The Tundar’s top speed is capped at 100 kmph (62 mph). Its lightweight build suggests it lacks the toughness associated with traditional pickup trucks.
Interior
While the exterior mimics the Toyota Tundra, the Tundar’s interior attempts to replicate the luxurious elements of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. The flat dashboard is finished in a dual-tone theme, featuring circular air vents and dual digital displays. Despite these efforts, the cabin incorporates a mix of basic materials and safety features are minimal, with no visible airbag on the steering wheel.
Market Position
Priced at approximately $6,000 (approx. Rs 5 lakh), the Tundar targets budget-conscious buyers in Southeast Asia. However, its limited utility, two-wheel-drive layout and lack of advanced safety features might deter potential customers.
Global Implications
Given China’s history of loose copyright enforcement, this isn’t the first instance of a local automaker producing designs resembling global models. The SVH Tundar joins a long list of Chinese vehicles that have faced criticism for borrowing heavily from established brands. However, its entry into markets outside Southeast Asia, particularly in regions with stricter intellectual property laws, is highly unlikely.
