Toyota Introduces Hybrid 48V Powertrain To Land Cruiser In Europe

Toyota has confirmed the introduction of a 48V mild hybrid system for the Land Cruiser in Europe. The new system includes a diesel engine supported by electric components. The setup is designed to maintain the vehicle’s existing off-road functions, including water wading capability of up to 700 mm. Toyota opened order books in mid-2025, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of the year.

System Configuration

The hybrid system pairs a 2.8L turbo diesel engine with an electric motor-generator, a lithium-ion battery, and a DC-DC converter. These components are installed to function in off-road environments. The system supports start-stop operations and assists during low-speed acceleration without replacing the primary diesel engine.

Motor-Generator and Energy Recovery

The electric motor-generator replaces the alternator. It collects energy during deceleration and uses it to assist with engine restarts and initial acceleration. In off-road conditions, the motor-generator contributes torque to help manage obstacles. Driving status is shown in the instrument cluster with CHG (charging), ECO or PWR indicators.

Stop-Start Operation

The hybrid system enables engine stop-start functionality. Engine restarts occur when braking is released. The system can hold brake pressure on inclines until engine torque resumes. Drivers can choose between two stop-start modes: NORMAL and LONG, depending on conditions such as traffic or use of the air conditioning system.

Battery Details

The lithium-ion battery has 13 cells and a capacity of 4.3 Ah. It weighs 7.6 kg and is placed under the rear cargo area. It supplies 16 bhp and 65 Nm of torque during acceleration. Cooling air is directed from the front of the vehicle. A filter prevents dust from entering the battery compartment.
