Audi Implements Virtual Production Control System In Body Shop

Audi, in collaboration with Siemens, Broadcom, and Cisco, has introduced a virtual programmable logic controller (PLC) system at its Böllinger Höfe body shop. The system, part of the Edge Cloud 4 Production (EC4P) platform, replaces hardware-based controllers with a software-driven solution for automation. Following its implementation in the manufacturing of a Lamborghini model, the company is preparing to expand the technology to its Neckarsulm plant.

Audi Implements Virtual Production Control System In Body Shop

Audi has implemented a virtual PLC system at their Böllinger Höfe body shop, the system is developed in partnership with Siemens, Broadcom and Cisco. The system operates through the Edge Cloud 4 Production (EC4P) platform, eliminating the need for traditional hardware controllers. This network of virtual PLCs is TÜV-certified and includes safety functions.

Technology and Implementation

The virtual PLCs control and monitor manufacturing processes in real time and allow for remote access. The EC4P platform was previously tested in the assembly of the Audi e-tron GT. In the latest phase, Audi has integrated the system into the production of a Lamborghini model at Böllinger Höfe, which serves as a testing ground for digital technologies.

Role of Technology Partners

Broadcom contributed virtualization software with a real-time industrial virtual switch to enable communication between systems. Cisco provided the Software-Defined Access network infrastructure, which was adapted for industrial applications. Siemens developed the virtual PLC system, incorporating safety features certified for production use.
Gerd Walker, Audi Board Member for Production, said, “The use of virtual programmable logic controllers in the body shop is an important productivity leap in our 360factory strategy for efficient and data-driven manufacturing. We want to bring the local cloud for production to all plants and leverage advances in digital control systems in the process.”

Future Expansion Plans

Audi plans to introduce the virtual PLC technology at its Neckarsulm facility, starting with the body shop for the upcoming Audi A6. Preparations for the implementation are currently underway.
