Continental Achieves ISCC PLUS Sustainability Certification For Its Korbach Tyre Facility
Tyre manufacturer Continental has announced that its tyre producing facility in Korbach, Germany, has received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. This certification confirms that the plant complies with documentation requirements for using materials from renewable and recycled sources and ensures traceability of these raw materials.
Continental has set a target to use more than 40 percent renewable and recycled materials in its tyre production by 2030, with a long-term goal of reaching 100 percent sustainable materials by 2050. The Korbach plant, apart from producing passenger car, motorcycle, and bicycle tyres, also manufactures solid tyres for material handling and intralogistics applications.
The tyres produced at the Korbach plant are used in various industrial vehicles, including forklifts, airport vehicles, heavy-duty transport vehicles, side forklifts, and platform trucks. The production process involves the use of rubber compounds and materials aimed at ensuring operational efficiency and durability.
The information shared by the company states that, established in 2010 the ISCC PLUS certification involves the application of a mass balance approach, where fossil, renewable and recycled raw materials are mixed within existing production processes. The quantity of these materials is tracked along the value chain and can be proportionally allocated. This process supports the gradual increase of renewable and recycled materials in tyre production. The certification aims to promote traceable and climate-friendly supply chains.
Klaus Framenau, Head of the Material Handling Tire business at Continental said, “We want to make our sustainability activities transparent, because we want to gradually increase the proportion of renewable and recycled materials in our material handling tires. Certifications like ISCC PLUS underline our commitment to making the future of intralogistics even more environmentally friendly”.
