The Indian electric vehicle market maintained a strong upward trajectory throughout September 2026, with total retail registrations reaching 36,108 units. This performance marks a notable 17.63% increase compared to the 30,696 units recorded in August 2026. When viewed on a year-on-year basis, the sector demonstrated significant expansion, nearly doubling its figures with a 94.56% growth rate over the 18,559 units sold in September 2025.
Tata Motors continued to hold the top position in the passenger electric vehicle segment, supported by its diverse product portfolio. The manufacturer reported 14,791 units sold in September 2026, reflecting a 12.41% month-on-month increase and a substantial 100.72% rise compared to the same month last year. Mahindra secured the second position with 7,780 units, achieving a 20.36% month-on-month growth and a 95.82% year-on-year increase. JSW MG Motor followed in third place with 5,254 registrations, marking a 13.41% month-on-month improvement.

Market Performance

The mid-tier of the market saw varied results. VinFast recorded 2,964 units, showing a significant month-on-month increase of 34.79%. Kia India also experienced a strong month, with sales surging to 1,262 units, representing a 95.66% month-on-month jump. Conversely, Maruti Suzuki saw its electric vehicle sales decline to 1,104 units, a 21.81% drop from the previous month. Meanwhile, BYD reported 836 units, a 53.96% month-on-month increase, as the company prepares to introduce its luxury Denza brand to the Indian market.
In the luxury and premium segments, performance remained dynamic. BMW India recorded 502 units, a sharp 83.21% month-on-month gain. Tesla India continued its rapid growth, reaching 291 units, which represents a 150.86% increase over August 2026 figures. Hyundai Motor India recorded 792 units, showing a 52.02% year-on-year increase despite a marginal month-on-month decline of 1.37%. The company has indicated plans to launch a new sub-4-meter electric SUV in the coming months.
Other manufacturers also contributed to the overall market volume. Toyota Kirloskar Motor reached 218 units, while Mercedes-Benz recorded 125 units. Citroen and Volvo reported 55 and 45 units respectively. Collectively, other smaller manufacturers added 101 units to the total, rounding out a month that highlights the continued diversification and expansion of the electric vehicle landscape in India.
