Maruti Suzuki Commissions 300 kW Green Hydrogen Plant at Manesar Facility to Cut Manufacturing Emissions
Maruti Suzuki has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant at its Manesar manufacturing facility. The company states that the pilot project is aimed at increasing the utilisation of renewable energy while reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing operations.
Maruti Suzuki Green Hydrogen Plant
The 300 kW electrolyser plant uses solar energy generated at the Manesar facility to produce green hydrogen. A key part of the project is the utilisation of surplus solar power generated during holidays, when manufacturing activity is lower or not taking place.
This electricity is directed to the electrolyser to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen is then stored and subsequently used in the manufacturing process. Maruti Suzuki will blend the green hydrogen with natural gas before using it as process fuel.
According to the company, its current manufacturing carbon footprint stands at around 615,000 tonnes, which it aims to bring down to 266,000 tonnes by FY 2030-31 through the adoption of multiple clean-energy technologies.
Maruti Suzuki's Manufacturing Energy Strategy
The company says the green hydrogen plant will add another energy source to its manufacturing operations. The project is based on using renewable electricity that may otherwise remain unutilised, storing the hydrogen and using it when required in the manufacturing process.
The commissioning of the 300 kW green hydrogen plant at Manesar marks the beginning of the company's pilot programme for hydrogen use in manufacturing, with further expansion to be considered based on the project's results.
Other Clean Energy Projects
Green hydrogen is one of several technologies being adopted by Maruti Suzuki to reduce the use of conventional energy sources in its manufacturing operations.
The company currently uses in-house solar power plants, renewable energy procured from government sources and power purchase agreements with third-party providers for solar and wind power.
At its Kharkhoda facility, Maruti Suzuki is in the advanced stages of setting up a 10 tonnes per day biogas plant, which is scheduled to be commissioned within FY 2026-27. The company has also commissioned a 1 MWh battery energy storage system at the facility.
Maruti Suzuki has started integrating compressed biogas (CBG) as a process fuel. Its board has also approved four CBG projects with an allocation of Rs 561 crore.
Official Statement
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Just like we have adopted a multi-pathway approach for products, we have also embarked on a journey of multiple renewable energy solutions for manufacturing operations. The commissioning of our 300 kW Green Hydrogen plant is aligned with the Government of India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. This, along with expansion of solar, biogas and installation of battery energy storage system reflects our commitment to transition to cleaner and sustainable energy solutions.”
He added, “India is emerging as a manufacturing powerhouse, and its competitive position may not depend solely on cost and quality, but also on CO2 intensity. With such initiatives, we are building capability today so that we can support a low-carbon and more energy-efficient manufacturing ecosystem tomorrow. Through multiple clean technologies, we aspire to reduce our carbon footprint in manufacturing operations from the present 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes in FY 2030-31.”
