Toyota has once again highlighted its alternative-fuel technology by showcasing a 100 per cent bioethanol-compatible (E100) Toyota Fortuner at the 2026 Indonesia Motor Show. Interestingly, the concept isn't entirely new - it was first revealed around three years ago - but its latest appearance reflects Toyota's continued focus on cleaner internal combustion technologies alongside electric and hybrid vehicles.
Key Highlights:
  • Toyota has showcased a 100% bioethanol (E100) compatible Fortuner concept at the 2026 Indonesia Motor Show.
  • The SUV is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine modified to run on E100 bioethanol fuel.
  • A B50 biodiesel Fortuner with a 48V mild-hybrid system has also been displayed.
  • With India's ethanol push and stricter emission norms, the flex-fuel Fortuner could eventually make its way to the country.
The Japanese carmaker also displayed a B50 biodiesel version of the Fortuner at the event. While both models remain concept vehicles and are not yet planned for mass production, they demonstrate Toyota's efforts to develop lower-emission powertrains for markets where biofuels are gaining importance.

E100 Fortuner Gets Major Mechanical Changes

Although the flex-fuel Fortuner looks identical to the standard SUV on the outside and inside, Toyota has made extensive changes beneath the bonnet to enable it to run on 100 per cent bioethanol fuel.
The SUV is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine that has been re-engineered with components such as revised fuel lines, hose pipes, cylinder head and other fuel-system parts that can withstand the corrosive nature of ethanol.
The engine produces 161 bhp and 243 Nm of peak torque and sends power to the rear wheels.

Biodiesel Version Retains 2.8-litre Diesel Engine

Toyota has also showcased a B50 biodiesel Fortuner, which continues to use the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine paired with an all-wheel-drive system.
The powertrain develops 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque, while also featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system that is expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Could the Flex-Fuel Fortuner Come to India?

India has been aggressively promoting ethanol-blended fuels as part of its strategy to reduce crude oil imports and lower vehicle emissions. While most manufacturers currently offer vehicles compatible with E20 fuel, Toyota's E100-compatible Fortuner represents a more advanced step in flex-fuel technology.
Although Toyota has not officially confirmed an India launch, ongoing pilot programmes and the country's increasing focus on alternative fuels make the flex-fuel Fortuner a strong candidate for the Indian market in the future.
If introduced, it could become one of the first premium SUVs in India capable of running entirely on bioethanol, offering buyers another cleaner alternative alongside hybrid and electric vehicles.
