Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 Facelift Unveiled with Updated Design and Safety Features

Volvo has revealed facelifted versions of the XC40, EX40 and EC40 in international markets. The updated 40-series models get minor styling changes, a larger 11.2-inch infotainment screen, Google Gemini integration and revisions to their safety and driver assistance systems.
There are no major changes to the overall design of the three models. Volvo has instead made a series of smaller updates to the exterior, cabin and electronics. Orders for the facelifted 40-series models have opened in selected international markets, with production scheduled to begin later in the autumn.

Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 Facelift: What's New?

Starting at the front, all three models get revised Matrix LED headlights with Volvo's familiar ‘Thor's Hammer’ daytime-running-light signature. The bonnet, front bumper and front wings have also been redesigned.
The XC40 gets a revised grille, while the EX40 and EC40 continue with their closed-off front sections. There are also new alloy wheel designs across the range. The XC40 can be specified with 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch wheels in international markets. Volvo will also offer Black Edition versions with black exterior elements.
At the back, the XC40 and EX40 get redesigned LED tail-lamps, tailgates and bumpers. The EC40, however, retains its existing rear-end design and sloping roofline.

Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 Facelift: Infotainment System

The cabin gets a more significant change in the form of an 11.2-inch touchscreen, replacing the 9-inch display used previously.
The new system runs Volvo's Google-based infotainment software and adds Google Gemini to the in-car assistant. It can be used for tasks such as route planning, finding locations and managing messages using natural-language commands.
Volvo has also added new upholstery and trim options. Depending on the market, these include Arianne Cardamom leather, Brown Ash and Black Ash finishes, as well as aluminium trim. The wireless smartphone charging pad and ambient lighting have also been revised.

Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 Facelift: Safety

The facelifted 40-series models get additional sensor hardware. This includes front and corner radars, a front-facing camera, rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and updated parking cameras. These systems are used for features such as automatic emergency braking and automatic emergency steering.
The cars also get a Door Opening Alert, which can warn occupants of approaching cyclists and other road users before a door is opened.
Volvo's optional Pilot Assist system has been revised as well. It now includes lane-change assistance. An updated 360-degree camera with a 3D view is also available for parking and low-speed manoeuvring. These are driver assistance systems and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The driver remains responsible for controlling the car and monitoring the road.

Volvo XC40: Powertrain

The XC40 continues with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in two states of tune. The lower-output version produces 163hp and 265Nm of torque, while the higher-output version makes 197hp and 300Nm. Both versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The EX40 and EC40 continue with multiple electric powertrain configurations. Depending on the version, they can use a rear-mounted electric motor or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The most powerful version produces 442hp and 670Nm of torque.
The EX40 has a claimed maximum WLTP range of 575km, while the EC40 is rated at up to 584km, depending on the variant.
The long-range rear-wheel-drive versions use an 82kWh battery, with 79kWh of usable capacity. They support DC fast charging at up to 205kW, with Volvo quoting a 10-80 percent charging time of around 28 minutes under suitable conditions.

Volvo 40 Series Facelift: OTA Updates

The updated models will continue to receive over-the-air software updates. Depending on the market and vehicle specification, these can be used to introduce software improvements and additional functions after the vehicle has been delivered.
