BMW Recalls 51 Units Of M 1000 Series Motorcycles Over Steering Damper Defect
BMW North America has announced a voluntary safety recall for 51 units of its M 1000 XR and M 1000 R motorcycles that were produced between October 7, 2024, and January 17, 2025 due to a potential defect in the steering damper.
According to the report filed by BMW to NTHSA said, This safety recall involves the steering damper which may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. Specifically, the valve pin inside the damper may not have been properly fastened within the housing. As a consequence, the valve pin may wander from its location, which could reduce the flow path capacity within the damper. If this occurs, the movement of the steering damper may become stiff
Increased steering effort by the rider would be needed at low speeds (less than 30 km/h), which could increase the risk of a crash, report added.
The issue stems from the possibility that the valve pin inside the steering damper was not properly fastened by the supplier, Marzocchi Suspension, during production. This improper fastening could cause the valve pin to shift, restricting fluid flow within the damper and making steering stiffer—especially noticeable at speeds below 30 km/h.
To deal with the issue, owners of the affected units will be asked to visit an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer, where the steering damper will be replaced with a new unit from an improved manufacturing process at no cost. According to BMW, the issue is already covered under the standard vehicle warranty, so reimbursement for prior repairs will not be required.
