Italian automaker, Ducati unveiled its first-ever motocross bike, the Desmo450 MX. The Desmo450 MX is powered by a 449.6 cc single-cylinder engine producing 62.63 bhp and torque of 53.5 Nm, with a rev limiter set at 11,900 rpm. The engine comes equipped with Desmodromic distribution which is a unique feature in the off-road landscape. Additionally, the Showa suspension is fully adjustable, and Brembo brakes with Galfer discs.
The development comes on the back of Ducati's philosophy of leveraging racing experience to inform production models. The bike is is currently available for order from selected dealers and will begin arriving in Europe in June, followed by the United States and other global markets.
Moreover, Ducati states the bike is designed to enhance the riding capabilities of both professional and amateur riders. In addition to that, the Desmo450 MX is the first in a planned series of specialised off-road motorcycles, aiming to broaden Ducati's reach to new segments of riders and expand the Ducatisti community. Ducati has also invested in training select dealerships to provide expert support for the new off-road category.
The bike features a lightweight aluminum frame designed with minimal welds for enhanced solidity, lightness, and rigidity. The design has proven successful in racing, with Alessandro Lupino securing the MX1 Italian Championship.
“We looked around, searching for the important uniqueness of our corporate culture and finding the one that I believe characterises Ducati like perhaps no other company: the closeness between the world of racing and the world of production motorbikes. And discovering, at the same time, that we have an incredible resource within us in the form of so many off-road enthusiasts in the various departments. All this has allowed us to present the Desmo450 MX today: an easy, high-performance bike, for amateurs and professionals alike, which we will constantly develop through sporting activity at the highest levels, supporting it thanks to a sales network that speaks the language of motocross enthusiasts and truly understands all their needs,” said Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding.
The Desmo450 MX features advanced electronics, including a patent-pending Traction Control system – the first of its kind on a motocross bike – that manages rear wheel slippage. The system intelligently identifies when not to intervene, such as during jumps, and can be temporarily deactivated by the rider. The electronics suite includes Launch Control and Engine Brake Control, configurable through the X-Link App, along with two Riding Modes and a Quickshifter.
Furthermore, the Ducati Performance catalogue offers a range of accessories to replicate the factory MXGP race bikes, including machined components, Akrapovič exhausts, and Brembo Racing brakes. A technical apparel collection developed with Drudi Performance is also available. The production model expected to be launched in mid-April will benefit from ongoing development through racing activities.
