Honda Reveals World's First V3 Motorcycle Engine With 'Electric Turbocharger' At EICMA 2024

Honda's new V3 engine makes use of an electric compressor that can control compression of the intake air irrespective of the engine rpm. The Japanese manufacturer says that this engine will be limited to higher capacity motorcycles in its range.

Honda V3 engine
Honda 's two-wheeler division has revealed the world's first V3 engine with forced induction at the ongoing EICMA 2024 in Milan, Italy. It features the world’s first electrical compressor for motorcycles, which is able to control compression of the intake air irrespective of engine rpm. The water-cooled 75-degree V3 engine is being developed for larger displacement Honda motorcycles, and is designed to be slim and compact in size.
Thanks to the electric compressor, high-response torque can be delivered even at lower rpm as opposed to a mechanical turbocharger that relies on kinetic energy from the exhaust gases, with the process taking longer, thereby resulting in a turbo-lag.
Moreover, Honda also says that the electric compressor allows a high degree of freedom of layout of all components in the limited space available on a motorcycle and efficient centralization of mass. It also does not require any form of intercooler. While Honda is yet to reveal more details about this V3 engine with an electric compressor, the company says that it will be limited to higher capacity and will eventually enter mass production.
While Honda is yet to announce if this powertrain will debut on a new motorcycle altogether, we expect it to be arrive first on litre-class bikes. It will be interesting to see if this engine will be incorporated into Honda's existing products such as the CBR1000RR and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP.
