Kawasaki Recalls Nearly 18,000 Ninja ZX-6R Motorcycles Over Engine Power Loss Risk

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. has issued a voluntary safety recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving 17,792 units of the Ninja ZX-6R motorcycle lineup, covering production years 2024 and 2025, due to a defect that could cause engine power loss, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects specific models, including the Ninja ZX-6R ABS, KRT Edition ABS and the 40th Anniversary Edition.
According to the report filed by Kawasaki to NHTSA said, The bolts holding the crankshaft together in the crank case were over-torqued, and as a result the #5 metal crankshaft bushing can be damaged by improper oil clearance between the crankshaft and the bushing.
Kawasaki has estimated that about 1 percent of the recalled motorcycles may actually be affected by the defect. However, as a precautionary measure, all motorcycles produced between April 3, 2023, and April 28, 2025, are being recalled for inspection and potential repair.

The recall covers two main production batches

  • Model Year 2025 Ninja ZX-6R: 9,983 units built between April 18, 2024, and June 28, 2025.
  • Model Year 2024 Ninja ZX-6R: 7,809 units manufactured from April 3, 2023, to June 5, 2024.
There are currently no reported warning signs that precede the engine issue, which underscores the importance of prompt inspection. Owner notification will be carried out in phases, with Kawasaki set to inform vehicle owners about the remedy schedule and procedures.
Owners of affected motorcycles are advised not to ride the vehicles until further notice. Detailed instructions on the repair process and reimbursement plans, if any, are expected to be provided in the owner communication.
