Yamaha Recalls Over 200 Motorcycles In Hawaii Over Throttle Sensor Fault
Pure Sports Distributing Inc., doing business as Yamaha of Hawaii, has issued a recall for 216 motorcycles sold between 2021 and 2025. A defect in the throttle position sensor could lead to engine stalling and potential loss of control.
Yamaha MT-09 SP
Pure Sports Distributing Inc., the authorized distributor for Yamaha motorcycles in Hawaii, initiated a voluntary recall for 216 units of Yamaha motorcycles that were produced between February 2021 and March 2025 due to an issue of excessive wear within the throttle position sensor (TPS) due to improper engine control unit (ECU) programming. The affected models include the 2021–2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, MT-09 SP, MT-09, MT-10 SP, MT-10, and XSR900.
According to the report filled by Yamaha to NHTSA, In affected motorcycles, brushes inside the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) will slide excessively due to improper ECU programming. While the motorcycle is driven, this excessive sliding generates abrasion particles that can accumulate on the contact points in the TPS.

The defect can cause unstable idling and engine stalling, potentially resulting in loss of control and a crash with severe injury or death. The malfunction indicator light will illuminate while displaying a P2135 fault code. Production of new motorcycles has since been corrected with updated ECU programming to prevent recurrence of the defect.
The defect was first flagged by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. in March 2025 through internal quality reviews. Yamaha Motor Corporation USA responded by supplying the necessary replacement parts, including a new TPS and updated ECU software, to dealers in Hawaii.
To deal with the issue, Yamaha is launching a factory modification campaign. Affected motorcycles will receive an ECU software update and TPS replacement at no cost to the owners. The recall remedy could take up to 90 minutes to complete per unit.
