FIAT Introduces Bio-Hybrid Technology In Brazil To Reduce Emissions
Fiat introduced its Bio-Hybrid technology in Brazil, fitted into their most successful SUV Pulse and Fastback. This technology combines electric and hybrid powertrains with biofuels, specifically ethanol to help reduce carbon emissions.
Fiat is a Dominant player in the Brazilian automotive space, housing the global Bio-Hybrid research center at Stellantis’ Betim facility.
The Bio-Hybrid system comes with the T200 Hybrid engine, that is a 1.0L turbo Flex engine that puts out 127 bhp mated with a seven-speed CVT gearbox, that makes it one of the most powerful engine in its class. Fiat has increased fuel efficiency significantly reducing fuel consumption by 11.5% for the Fastback and 10.7% for the Pulse on gasoline and ethanol in urban cycles.
Fiat’s hybrid system uses a multifunctional electric motor in place of conventional alternators and starters. It runs on two 12V batteries: a 68Ah lead-acid battery and an 11Ah lithium-ion battery. Together htye power electric motor that assists the combustion engine and helps recharge the batteries.
The system operates in four key modes to optimize efficiency:
1. e-Start and Stop: The engine will shuts off when not in use to save fuel and restarting when necessary.
2. e-Assist: The electric motor adds torque during acceleration and reducing fuel consumption.
3. Smart Alternator: The alternator charges the batteries when low and maintains power when sufficiently charged.
4. e-Regen: Regenerative braking captures energy during deceleration and recharges the batteries, recovering up to 25% of energy.
