Porsche Zuffenhausen Facility Completes 75 Years Of Car Production
German sports and luxury car maker Porsche has announced that its Zuffenhausen facility has completed 75 years of car production. Sharing this update the company stated that the first Porsche 356 manufactured in Germany was completed on April 6th 1950.
Porsche Zuffenhausen Facility
The information shared by the company highlights that Porsche commenced operations in Zuffenhausen back in 1938 as a construction office. The company's first production car, the Porsche 356 ‘No.1’ Roadster, was built in Austria in 1948 before production shifted to Stuttgart. In April 1950, the first Porsche 356 was completed in the Zuffenhausen facility, and by the end of that year, 317 units had been built and this plant kept on expanding thereon in lieu to the increasing demand. Currently the Zuffenhausen facility remains Porsche’s primary production site, manufacturing the 911, 718 model line and Taycan. The facility also houses engine production for both combustion and electric powertrains.
Zuffenhausen Facility Expansion
Porsche states that in the 1950s it introduced production techniques which allowed different variants of the 356 to be manufactured on a single line. This approach continues at the Zuffenhausen facility, where all 911 models and their variants are assembled on a shared production line. In the 1960s, the company introduced the iconic 911 which led to further expansion of this facility. Following which this facility continued to grow.
Transition To Electric Mobility
The company outlines that in 2019, it began production of the Taycan at the Zuffenhausen facility. This transition involved modifications to the plant, including the construction of a new body shop, a new paint shop and a modular assembly building. The facility now produces both internal combustion and electric powertrains.
