Upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC EV Undergoes Extreme Winter Testing In Sweden
German luxury and sports car maker Mercedes-Benz has shared that it is testing its all-electric GLC in extreme winter conditions in Sweden. With this update it comes to light that the new model, built on an 800-volt architecture which aims to deliver improved efficiency, range and charging speed while maintaining the versatility of the GLC lineup.
All Electric GLC: Testing
The details of the winter testing revealed by Mercedes-Benz highlight that the testing has taken place in the Arjeplog region of Sweden to evaluate vehicle performance in temperatures below freezing. The all-electric GLC was tested on snow-covered roads and icy tracks to assess its handling, traction and drivetrain efficiency in extreme winter conditions. This SUV features the company’s 4MATIC system, with a Disconnect Unit (DCU), enabling the front axle to engage or disengage as needed, optimizing torque distribution based on real-time conditions.
The information shared by the company highlights that it conducts over 500 tests before production approval. For electric vehicles, additional tests evaluate cold-weather battery performance, charging reliability and power output in low temperatures. The Arjeplog facility in Sweden includes test tracks with variable friction surfaces, steep gradients and frozen lake circuits to assess stability and efficiency. The company continues winter testing as part of its overall validation process before launching the all-electric GLC.
All Electric GLC: Powertrain
The all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC ’s rear-axle drive unit integrates a two-speed transmission, enhancing energy efficiency. High-voltage battery options will be available, with the top-tier variant supporting DC charging above 320 kW. The batteries use anodes blended with silicon oxide, increasing energy density while reducing weight.
The braking system integrates multiple components into a compact unit, optimizing energy recuperation while ensuring consistent pedal response. If needed, the system switches to hydraulic fallback to maintain braking performance.
