While Tesla has been rumoured to enter the Indian automotive market for some time now, the 110% import custom duties of luxury EVs priced above $40,000 became a huge deterrent for the company. However, the government of India has reduced the custom duty of such imported vehicles to 70% which has made the market lucrative for the electric vehicle company.
Despite India’s slow emergence of the electric vehicle market which sold only 100,000 units last year, the company has seen potential when it comes to the adoption of cleaner energy with the government providing incentives for EV adoption. In contrast, China’s electric vehicle market witnessed sales of approximately 11 million units last year.
The hiring activity from the company in India suggests the company is setting up its offices. However, Tesla has not yet revealed on when it will start selling its vehicles in India. Additionally, there are no reports which back the American automaker’s intent of manufacturing in India.
