The River Indie claims to be the "SUV of Scooters", promising practicality, comfort and everyday usability. With generous storage, large 14-inch wheels and a family-friendly character, does it deliver on that promise?

Electric scooters are available by the dozen in the Indian market, so making one that is instantly noticeable for its larger-than-life appearance and mannerisms is an achievement. The River Indie follows this script meticulously with its upright stance, large wheels, spacious under-seat storage, and my personal favourite – its ability to feel like a motorcycle at times.
Does all that make the River Indie good enough to be your next scooter? I spent a few weeks riding it, and here’s what I found out.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Design – Built to Stand Out
In a market filled with sleek-looking electric scooters, the River Indie takes a different approach. Its design is tall, broad and muscular, giving it a commanding road presence that immediately sets it apart from rivals. However, like most electric scooters, it looks futuristic.
The Indie's upright stance adds to its presence on the road.

The front end features a distinctive twin-LED headlamp setup that adds to its appeal. The large 14-inch wheels further reinforce the SUV-inspired design philosophy while also serving a practical purpose on Indian roads. The Indie also gets protective metal rails along the front apron, which not only give it a rugged vibe but also add utility.

The River Indie has a seat height of 787 mm, and even shorter riders will feel confident in riding the scooter. The broad seat ensures comfort during longer commutes. The wide handlebars complement this setup by offering good leverage.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Practicality – The Real Highlight
The River Indie has been designed around the needs of everyday users. Up front, there is a dedicated bottle holder along with a rubberised organiser that securely stores smaller items under a lock and key. A front-mounted hook capable of carrying up to 3 kg adds further convenience for grocery runs and daily errands. The footboard offers good amounts of space to rest your legs. For reference, my shoe size is 9.

However, the biggest talking point is the under-seat storage. River has created enough space to accommodate a full-size helmet and a half face helmet with ease, however, fitting two full- full-size international safety-spec helmets might be a squeeze. An LED light inside the storage compartment further enhances usability at night.

Like most scooters, the practicality quotient for the River Indie isn’t just about storage spaces. The scooter comes equipped with rider and pillion footpegs, and pannier mounts add another layer of versatility for users who need added carrying capacity.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Battery, Range and Performance
Powering the River Indie is a mid-mounted electric motor that sends power to the rear wheel through a chain-drive setup, a powertrain layout found mostly in motorcycles. You get three riding modes – Eco, Ride and Rush – that adjust the response of the powertrain.
The scooter is equipped with a 4 kWh battery pack. A full charge takes approximately six hours.

According to River, riders can expect a range of approximately 110 km in Eco mode. Ride mode delivers an estimated range of 80-90 km, while Rush mode brings that figure down to around 60-70 km. However, during our use, we saw indicated ranges of about 10km less than claimed.
On the move, the power delivery feels smooth and refined. The scooter is easy to ride in urban conditions and does not feel intimidating even for less experienced riders.
The River Indie can be fully charged from 0 per cent in about 6 hours using the supplied AC charger

That said, performance is most satisfying in Rush mode. The ‘Ride’ mode prioritises efficiency over outright acceleration, which can make quick overtakes require a little more planning. However, Eco mode is best left for low-range emergencies as it can be quite slow for daily riding. Overall, while the powertrain performs its intended role adequately, it lacks the punch that some buyers may expect at this price point.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Ride and Handling – Surprisingly Capable
The River Indie's strongest dynamic trait is its stability. The large 14-inch wheels do an excellent job of absorbing road imperfections and dealing with potholes, broken surfaces and speed breakers. As a result, the scooter feels planted and confidence-inspiring across a variety of urban environments.

Its balanced chassis and wide handlebars make low-speed manoeuvres easy, while overall control remains predictable in traffic. The riding experience feels mature and well sorted, making it particularly appealing for family-oriented buyers looking for a dependable daily commuter.
Furthermore, the Indie stays quite composed when ridden at higher speeds as well.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Useful Accessories for Everyday Use
River also offers a range of accessories designed to enhance practicality. Buyers can opt for a waterproof smartphone holder, a pillion backrest, a luggage plate, a camera mount and throttle grips.

Furthermore, aftermarket panniers can easily be mounted on the scooter. This easy access to accessories further strengthens the scooter's utility-focused character.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Where It Falls Short
While the Indie scores high on practicality and comfort, its powertrain leaves room for improvement. The scooter's top speed is limited to around 90 km/h, which restricts its highway usability. In addition, the lower riding modes can feel underpowered when quick overtakes are required.

Pricing is another factor worth considering. With an ex-showroom price ranging between Rs 1.46 lakh and Rs 1.49 lakh (depending on your city), some buyers may expect stronger performance or a greater real-world range.
River Indie Electric Scooter Review: Verdict - A Family-Friendly Electric Scooter with a Clear Purpose
The River Indie succeeds because it focuses on solving real-world problems rather than chasing headline-grabbing specifications.
Its spacious storage, comfortable ergonomics, stable handling and thoughtful practicality make it one of the most user-friendly electric scooters currently on sale. It is a scooter that feels designed around the needs of families and everyday commuters.

The powertrain is its weakest link. More performance and a longer range would have elevated the overall package significantly. Even so, buyers looking for a comfortable, practical and distinctive electric scooter for city use will find plenty to like here.
For those who value usability over outright performance, the River Indie delivers exactly what it promises – a genuinely practical electric scooter that stands apart from the crowd.
