Their strong low-end torque, highway-friendly nature and potentially better fuel economy can make them practical for high-mileage users. Despite the growing focus on petrol, CNG and electric vehicles, a few manufacturers continue to offer diesel-powered cars at relatively accessible prices. Here are five of the most affordable diesel cars you can buy in India.
Tata Altroz - Price: Rs 8.29 lakh - Rs 10.44 lakh
The Tata Altroz is currently the only hatchback in India to offer a diesel engine. It gets a 1.5-litre diesel motor that produces 90hp and 200Nm of torque. The diesel version is available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
In terms of safety, the Altroz gets six airbags as standard, along with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. Other features include a voice-activated single-pane sunroof, wireless smartphone charger, automatic climate control with rear AC vents and rear doors that open up to 90 degrees.
Mahindra Bolero - Price: Rs 8.49 lakh - Rs 9.99 lakh
The Mahindra Bolero is a rugged SUV primarily designed for buyers looking for a vehicle that can handle varied road conditions. It uses a ladder-frame chassis and is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine producing 76hp and 210Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and sends power to the rear wheels.
The Bolero is not available with an automatic gearbox or four-wheel-drive system. Features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on higher variants, a digital instrument cluster, power steering, manual AC with heater, power windows and Type-C USB charging ports.
Mahindra Bolero Neo - Price: Rs 8.99 lakh- Rs 10.79 lakh
The Mahindra Bolero Neo is a seven-seat SUV that combines a ladder-frame chassis with a rear-wheel-drive layout. It is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine that produces 100hp and 260Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Feature highlights include a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, manual air conditioning, power windows on all four doors, electrically adjustable ORVMs and a height-adjustable driver's seat.
Mahindra XUV 3XO - Price: Rs 9.36 lakh - Rs 14.70 lakh
The Mahindra XUV 3XO is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 117hp and 300Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox and an AMT.
The SUV comes with dual 10.25-inch displays, with one serving as the touchscreen infotainment system and the other as the digital instrument cluster. It also gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, rear AC vents and a large panoramic sunroof.

Kia Sonet - Price: Rs 9.28 lakh - Rs 14.35 lakh
The Kia Sonet is another sub-four-metre SUV available with a diesel engine. Its 1.5-litre CRDi VGT four-cylinder diesel engine produces 114bhp and 250Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Feature highlights include ventilated front seats with leatherette upholstery, a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen with navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bose seven-speaker sound system, a single-pane electric sunroof, ambient lighting and six airbags as standard.
