Mahindra Thar OG vs Maruti Suzuki Jimny Spec Comparison: What’s Different?

Looking for a tough, no-nonsense off-roader that can handle rough trails without breaking the bank? The Mahindra Thar OG and Maruti Suzuki Jimny often come up in the same conversation. Both are compact, body-on-frame machines built for adventure and both have a loyal following among Indian buyers who want something more capable than a regular crossover.

The newly launched Mahindra Thar OG is available in an ex-showroom price range of Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 17.75 lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny starts at Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 14.67 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Mahindra Thar OG measures 3,995mm in length, 1,870mm in width, 1,855mm in height and has a wheelbase spanning 2,450mm.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny measures 3,985mm in length, 1,645mm in width, 1,720 mm in height and has a wheelbase spanning 2,590mm.

The Mahindra Thar OG comes with three engine choices. There’s a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel making 116.93bhp and 300Nm, a bigger 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 150.06bhp and 330Nm, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol that delivers 159.58bhp and 330Nm. Both manual and automatic six-speed gearboxes are available, and the 4WD system is offered with the petrol as well as the diesel engines.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny sticks to a simpler setup. It uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated K15B petrol engine that produces 103bhp and 134.2Nm of torque. The Jimny is available with a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

On the features side, the Thar OG gets a fresh look with C-shaped LED DRLs, LED ice-cube fog lamps with cornering function, LED tail lamps, new badging and a revised front grille. Inside, it offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay, electric power steering, terrain modes, rear AC vents, a lockable glovebox, sliding armrest, A-pillar grab handles, TPMS, multi-information display and rear parking sensors. An electronically locking differential is also part of the package.

The Jimny is more basic but still well equipped. Lower Zeta variants get a 7-inch touchscreen while the top Alpha trim steps up to a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ unit, both supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include automatic climate control, cruise control, push-button start and tilt-adjustable steering (on the Alpha).

Safety kit on the Thar OG includes six airbags, disc brakes on all four wheels, vehicle dynamics management, traction control, roll-over mitigation, hill-hold and hill-descent control, brake disc wiping, electronic brake force distribution, ABS with brake assist, a reverse camera, a roll cage and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

The Jimny also comes with six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS with EBD, hill-hold assist, hill-descent control and a brake limited-slip differential.
