Alfa Romeo Teases New C-SUV with Hybrid and Electric Options: Production to Begin in 2027

Alfa Romeo has offered the first glimpse of a brand-new C-segment SUV that will join its global lineup in the coming years. The model was teased during the National Automotive Industry Roundtable in Italy, where Stellantis Chief Operating Officer Emanuele Cappellano unveiled the first official image. While many were expecting to see the next-generation Stelvio, the teaser instead previews an entirely new SUV that will occupy a fresh position in Alfa Romeo's portfolio.
Key Highlights:
  • Alfa Romeo has teased an all-new C-segment SUV based on the STLA Medium platform.
  • The upcoming SUV will sit between the Tonale and the next-generation Stelvio.
  • It will be offered with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrain options.
  • Production is scheduled to begin at Alfa Romeo's Melfi plant in Italy in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Will Sit Between Tonale and Next-Gen Stelvio

The upcoming SUV will be built on Stellantis' STLA Medium platform, confirming that it is not the replacement for the Stelvio. The next-generation Stelvio is expected to use the larger STLA Large architecture.
Instead, this new C-SUV will slot between the existing Tonale and the upcoming second-generation Stelvio. Alfa Romeo is also expected to give the model an all-new name rather than reviving an existing badge.
The brand already sells the smaller Junior crossover in Europe, making it unlikely that this new SUV will be positioned below the Tonale.

Multiple Powertrain Options Confirmed

Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the new SUV will feature "multi-energy" powertrains. This means buyers can expect a choice of:
  • Mild-hybrid petrol
  • Plug-in hybrid
  • Fully electric
The availability of these powertrains may vary depending on the market. Since the SUV is based on the STLA Medium platform, it will share its underpinnings with several other Stellantis models, including the Jeep Compass, Peugeot 3008 and Lancia Gamma.
Although Alfa Romeo has revealed only a close-up teaser image, it suggests the SUV will feature a sleek, coupe-inspired rear profile. The design is being developed at Alfa Romeo's design centre in Turin, Italy, and is expected to retain the brand's signature sporty styling.
The sloping rear design could give the SUV a more dynamic appearance, though it remains to be seen how much luggage space it will offer.

Production to Start in Late 2027

Production of the new C-SUV is scheduled to begin at Alfa Romeo's Melfi manufacturing plant in Italy during the fourth quarter of 2027.
The current Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV are expected to remain in production until 2027, when both models are likely to receive long-awaited next-generation replacements. The recently updated Tonale could also be replaced around the same period as Alfa Romeo refreshes its SUV lineup.
Alongside the new SUV, Alfa Romeo also hinted at a new Bottega Fuoriserie project being developed in collaboration with Maserati. The company has not revealed any technical details, but early indications suggest it could be a limited-production sports car aimed at showcasing the Italian brands' design and engineering expertise.
