Bentley Torcal Unveiled As Brand’s First Electric SUV: Gets 875bhp and 1,350 Nm

Bentley has entered the electric vehicle space with the unveiling of the all-new Torcal, its first fully electric model. The luxury SUV is available in standard and Torcal S variants and combines a claimed WLTP range of up to 600 km with 800V fast-charging technology. Bentley says the battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 16 minutes.

The Torcal also marks the beginning of a new design direction for Bentley, while introducing new chassis technology, updated cabin features and a wider choice of sustainable materials.

The Torcal brings a new design language to Bentley while retaining some of the styling elements associated with the brand. Developed by Bentley’s design team in Crewe, the electric SUV features a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a new front-end design with an illuminated grille.

At the rear, the SUV gets a new lighting and design treatment that was first previewed on the EXP 15 concept. Bentley has also used fewer character lines across the body to put more focus on the vehicle’s proportions.

The Torcal will be offered with five wheel designs. The standard model gets 21-inch wheels, while the Torcal S comes with 22-inch wheels as standard. Customers can also choose from additional 22-inch designs, including an aerodynamic option. The Torcal is also the first Bentley to feature the company’s redesigned emblem, which was introduced last year.

Inside, the Torcal continues Bentley’s wing-inspired dashboard design. The cabin combines leather, wool, veneer and aluminium finishes, while physical controls remain on the centre console and steering wheel alongside the company’s latest digital interfaces.

The new seats get 16-way adjustment as standard, along with heating, ventilation, adjustable bolsters and massage functions. Bentley will also offer optional Postural Adjust and Smart Seat Climate systems. A Wellness package adds massage functionality to the seat cushion.

For the first time in a Bentley, the rear seats can be electrically folded, adding more flexibility to the cabin.

Instead of recreating the sound of an internal-combustion engine, Bentley has developed a new audio experience called Bentley Dynamic Symphony. The system uses sounds created with musical instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar. These sounds change according to factors such as vehicle speed and torque demand. Drivers can adjust the sound through different drive modes or switch it off completely.

The Torcal also gets dedicated sounds for functions such as turn indicators, touchscreen inputs and the digital assistant. For entertainment, a 16-speaker, 620W audio system is standard. Buyers can also opt for a Naim system with 28 speakers, 1,780W output, Dolby Atmos, seat-integrated transducers and speakers built into the headrests.

The Bentley Torcal uses a dual-motor electric powertrain producing 875bhp and 1,350 Nm of torque. Bentley says this makes it the most powerful and highest-torque model in its history. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 2.9 seconds. Power comes from two permanent magnet synchronous motors, with the rear motor featuring a locking differential and multi-plate clutch setup.

The motors are powered by an 800V battery pack with 192 lithium-ion pouch cells and a usable capacity of 113 kWh. Bentley says the battery can deliver a range of up to 600 km under the WLTP testing cycle. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 16 minutes using compatible fast-charging equipment. Bentley is also offering a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the battery.
