X5 to Offer Five Drivetrain Choices
The new BMW X5 will be unique within the company’s portfolio by offering customers five drivetrain technologies. These include traditional internal combustion engines (petrol and diesel), electrified systems (plug-in hybrid and battery electric) and hydrogen fuel cell technology.
BMW plans to integrate both battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell options into its line-up from 2028, extending its strategy of maintaining multiple drivetrain solutions to meet varied global demand.
Hydrogen Technology Development
The iX5 Hydrogen benefits from a more compact and efficient fuel cell system that improves range and power output while lowering energy consumption. Early prototypes were built in Munich and Steyr, with further components produced at BMW’s Landshut plant.
Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said, “By launching the new BMW X5 with a choice of five drive system variants, we are once again demonstrating our leading position as a technology pioneer. “Hydrogen has an essential part to play in global decarbonisation, which is why we are committed to driving the technology forward.”
HyMoS Initiative to Expand Infrastructure
Alongside the vehicle launch, BMW is promoting the Hydrogen Mobility at Scale (HyMoS) initiative to strengthen hydrogen infrastructure. The program brings together industry and institutional partners to support refueling networks for passenger cars, buses, and trucks.
Pilot projects are already active in Germany and France, with insights from these efforts planned to guide further expansion in metropolitan regions across Europe and beyond.
