BorgWarner To Supply High-Voltage Coolant Heaters For Global OEM’s Plug-in Hybrid Models

BorgWarner has signed its largest North American contract to supply 400V high-voltage coolant heaters for a range of upcoming plug-in hybrid vehicles. The components will support thermal management in pickups, SUVs and minivans beginning in 2027.

BorgWarner To Supply High-Voltage Coolant Heaters For Global OEM’s Plug-in Hybrid Models

BorgWarner announced that it has secured a high-volume contract with a global original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply its 400-volt high-voltage coolant heaters (HVCH). These components will be used in a series of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), including mid-size pickups, SUVs and minivans. Production under this agreement is scheduled to start in 2027. This is the largest HVCH deal for plug-in hybrids in North America to date, based on projected vehicle volumes.

HVCH for Multiple Vehicle Platforms

The heater design is compact and adaptable, allowing it to fit various vehicle types without requiring platform changes. This flexibility enables the technology to support different configurations across the automaker’s lineup.

Performance and Thermal Features

The HVCH uses a thick-film heating element and brazed aluminum fin technology, supporting thermal output up to 10 kW. This setup helps manage the flow of coolant, supports heat transfer and reduces the build-up of bubbles in the system.
Dr. Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies, said, “BorgWarner has been collaborating with this global OEM on a variety of projects and is looking forward to furthering our relationship by providing this efficient solution for battery and cabin heating. Our HVCH technology compared to other heaters allows us to provide a solution that improves robustness and provides cost improvements for our customer without altering the overall vehicle environment.”

Application in Battery and Cabin Heating

The heater functions independently of external temperature and is used to warm the vehicle cabin and battery. This supports efficient battery operation, extends battery life and helps maintain consistent driving range and charging performance.
