Government Considers Annual And Lifetime Toll Pass Options For Highways
The government will likely introduce an annual toll pass for a one-time payment of Rs 3,000 and a lifetime toll pass for a one-time fee of Rs 30,000, as per a report from Times of India. This comes on the back of government proposing fixed period passes to offer respite for private car owners using highways and expressways frequently.
Additionally, it has been reported that the proposal continues to be in advanced stages with the Ministry of Road Transport. The toll passes would allow access to all national highways and expressways for a limited period of time. The Annual Pass would be functional for a year, much like the name suggests, whereas the lifetime pass would only be functional for 15 years. Moreover, both passes will be synced to FastTag of the user.
Furthermore, private car owners can purchase a monthly pass for approximately Rs 340. However, the pass would be applicable to just one toll plaza and costs Rs 4,080 annually. The government, however, might discuss a reduction in the base toll rate per km.
As per government data, the toll collection from privately-run cars from 2023 to 2024 was approximately Rs 8,000 crore which makes up for 21% of the total toll revenue of Rs 55,000 crore for the period. Despite the belief that National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is expected to lose some revenue initially, the authority will not lose revenue when it comes to long term.
