The automaker has stated that the new GT is being developed around a set of core attributes described as the “Spirit of Jaguar Drive”. These include performance capability, refinement and composure, which the company intends to translate into an electric format.
The information shared by the automaker highlights that Jaguar engineers have revisited several legacy models in May 2023 as part of the development process for the electric four-door GT. These included the XK120, E-type, XJ Coupe V12, XJS and XJ Series I. The exercise was aimed at identifying consistent traits associated with the brand’s driving characteristics.
According to Jaguar, each of the historic models evaluated during development contributed to specific aspects of the new GT. The XK120 influenced the requirement for ride comfort and a driver-focused cabin. The iconic Jaguar E-type had shaped expectations around performance delivery and road presence. The V12 XJ Coupe was used as a reference for balancing performance with comfort. The XJS and XJ Series I were used as a reference for long-distance capability and refinement.
In terms of design, the four-door GT will feature a long bonnet and a low roofline. Jaguar states that this layout is intended to maintain continuity with earlier models while diverging from typical electric vehicle proportions.
The details shared by the automaker outlines that the upcoming electric four-door GT will use a tri-motor powertrain which is expected to generate a peak power output of over 986bhp (1,000PS) and 1,300Nm of torque. It will also feature torque vectoring supported by software capable of responding within one millisecond to manage power delivery. The chassis setup will include dynamic air suspension along with twin-valve active dampers. This configuration is aimed at maintaining ride quality while handling performance demands.
Rawdon Glover, Managing Director, Jaguar, said: “Right from the start, our aim was to deliver a true Jaguar. To do that, we wanted to re-examine the provenance of the brand and the best way to achieve this was to drive some of our greatest models from the past 90 years. It provided clear direction to help us create the most technically advanced Jaguar ever made.”
Sharing insights from the development of the upcoming electric GT, Jaguar stated that it has carried out both real-world and virtual testing across multiple conditions as part of the development programme. The company says this has helped refine driving dynamics and develop in-house propulsion systems for the model.
The four-door electric GT will serve as the foundation for Jaguar’s future vehicles, including design, performance architecture and software systems. More details will be disclosed at its global debut in September 2026.
Matt Becker, Vehicle Engineering Director, JLR said, “At the outset we took the unusual step of spending time behind the wheel of great models from our past – to get under the skin of what truly makes a Jaguar. At its best, Jaguar has always delivered two characters – performance and comfort – in perfect harmony and our new luxury GT is no different. It embodies everything the brand stands for. Jaguar’s founder, Sir William Lyons, used to say that ‘driving should be a joy not a chore’.”
