Tata Motors owned British legacy automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a £500 million investment to upgrade its Halewood facility in Merseyside to produce electric vehicles (EVs). This transformation is part of JLR's plan to support the production of EVs alongside internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models.
According to the information shared by the company the Halewood facility, originally built in 1963 has already undergone a £250 million worth of construction work over the past year. The site has been expanded by 32,364 sqm to accommodate JLR’s medium-sized electric SUVs built on the Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. The facility has been updated with new production lines, autonomous robots, and digital plant management systems. The upgrades will allow the plant to produce ICE, PHEV, and battery electric vehicle (BEV) models. Halewood is set to become JLR’s first facility dedicated to all-electric production.
The company also revealed that this facility now includes a body shop that can produce 500 vehicle bodies daily, modifications to the paint shop to handle increased production, and a new storage system for painted vehicle bodies. The final production line has been extended to handle battery installations. Over 1,600 employees have completed high-voltage training to work on electric vehicle production.
JLR is also investing in training programs to reskill its workforce for electric vehicle production, with a new training centre established at Halewood. The site is preparing for future vehicle technologies with new systems for autonomous driving and connected services. Test builds of the EMA body shells have been completed, and the company will continue to test and refine the production processes before full production begins.
Barbara Bergmeier, Executive Director, Industrial Operations said, “Halewood has been the heart and soul of JLR in the Northwest of England for well over two decades, producing vehicles such as the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport. Halewood will be our first all‑electric production facility, and it is a testament to the brilliant efforts by our teams and suppliers who have worked together to equip the plant with the technology needed to deliver our world class luxury electric vehicles".
