Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV Axed: Production Ends December 2026
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), plans to cease production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport by December 2026. This decision allows the Halewood facility to pivot towards manufacturing next-gen electrified vehicles, aligning with evolving automotive regulations in Europe.
Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV Axed: Production Ends December 2026
Tata Motors owned British legacy automaker, Jaguar Land Rover also popularly known as JLR is set to discontinue a SUV this year. According to multiple media reports the Land Rover Discovery Sport production will end in December 2026. This end in production will mark an end to the 11-year production run of this SUV.
Land Rover Discovery Sport Production To End
The Land Rover Discovery Sport was introduced in late 2014 as the replacement for the Freelander. Following the end of production the Halewood manufacturing facility will transition to producing next-generation electrified vehicles. The Discovery Sport will remain on sale in select markets until dealer inventory is exhausted, although factory orders have already been stopped in several European countries.
Key Highlights:
- Production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport will end in December 2026
- Halewood plant to be repurposed for JLR's next-generation electrified models
- Freelander likely to replace the Discovery Sport in the lineup
According to JLR, the Discovery Sport is reaching the end of its planned product lifecycle. Production has already begun winding down in markets such as France, Germany and Spain, with manufacturing scheduled to conclude in December 2026.
The move will allow JLR to prepare its Halewood plant in the United Kingdom for future products based on the company's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), which will underpin its next generation of electric and hybrid SUVs.
The Discovery Sport's exit also comes as the European Union's General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2) comes into effect. The updated legislation requires additional active safety systems on new vehicles sold in Europe.
Instead of upgrading the ageing Discovery Sport to comply with the new regulations, JLR has opted to discontinue the model. Several manufacturers have adopted a similar strategy for older products nearing the end of their lifecycle.
Last year JLR also confirmed the return of the Freelander nameplate. The discontinuation of the Discovery Sport could indicate that the upcoming Freeland can take back its position in the company’s lineup.
