Nissan And Honda End Merger Talks, Plan To Collaborate On Electric Vehicles
Nissan and Honda have decided to end discussions on a possible business integration, terminating the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on December 23, 2023. The companies cited the need for independent decision-making amid a changing market. Despite this, Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors will continue working within a strategic partnership focused on electrification and intelligent vehicle technologies.
Nissan And Honda End Merger Talks, Plan To Collaborate On Electric Vehicles
Key Factors Behind the Decision
Since the signing of MOU, the management teams from both the companies, have discussed and considered the surrounding market environment, the objectives of the business integration, and the management strategies and structures post-integration. Additionally, taking into account the importance of a business integration, both companies have carefully consulted with various stakeholders.
As a result of these discussions, both companies concluded that, to prioritize speed of decision-making and execution of management measures in an increasingly volatile market environment heading into the era of electrification, it would be most appropriate to cease discussions and terminate the MOU.
In August last year, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have agreed to conduct joint research on foundational technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The collaboration aims to accelerate efforts towards a carbon-neutral and accident-free society by focusing on SDVs. Both companies are investing in and promoting research and development in key areas such as autonomous driving, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies are seen as crucial for the future value and competitiveness of vehicles.
