Owners Of 20-Year-Old Vehicles May Have To Pay More For Registration Renewal
The Ministry of Road Transport has proposed a steep increase in renewal fees for vehicles older than 20 years. The move aims to discourage the use of older vehicles and promote the adoption of cleaner alternatives. The proposal also includes increased fitness test fees for commercial vehicles.
Owners Of 20-Year-Old Vehicles May Have To Pay More For Registration Renewal
The Ministry of Road Transport has issued a draft notification proposing a significant increase in renewal fees for vehicles older than 20 years. According to the proposal, renewing the registration of a two-wheeler older than 20 years will cost Rs 2,000, while car owners will have to pay Rs 10,000. The current fees are considerably lower.
Revised Fees for Commercial Vehicles
The draft also suggests higher renewal charges for commercial vehicles that have been in use for over 15 years. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles will have to pay Rs 12,000 and Rs 18,000, respectively, for renewal. For vehicles over 20 years, these charges will be doubled to Rs 24,000 and Rs 36,000.
Impact on Vehicle Owners
These changes will apply nationwide but will not affect vehicle owners in Delhi-NCR, where diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are already banned as per court orders.
Fitness Test Fees Also Set to Increase
The ministry has also proposed an increase in fitness test fees for vehicles older than 20 years. The All India Motor Transport Congress has opposed this move, stating that the current fees range from Rs 500 to Rs 3,000, depending on the vehicle type. The new proposal increases these fees significantly, with commercial motorcycles required to pay Rs 1,000 for 8 to 15 years and Rs 2,000 for vehicles older than 15 years. Fees for three-wheelers and heavy vehicles have been proposed between Rs 7,000 and Rs 25,000.
