Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Auto Expo 2025 on Friday at Bharat Mandapam, emphasizing India's pivotal role in shaping the future of mobility. He highlighted the nation’s significant achievements in the automobile sector, including annual vehicle sales of 2.5 crore units and an inflow of USD 36 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) over the past four years. Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries also attended the event underlining the government’s support for the auto industry’s evolution towards sustainability and self-reliance.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi remarked that the automotive industry, driven by innovation and technology, is experiencing rapid transformation in India. He stated, "India is an excellent destination for every investor looking to see their future in mobility," and reiterated the government’s commitment to the 'Make in India' and 'Make for the World' initiatives.
Key Trends In India’s Mobility Sector
- Electric Mobility Surge: PM Modi highlighted a significant rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales, from 2,600 units annually a decade ago to 16.8 lakh units in 2024. He projected an eight-fold increase in EV numbers by 2030, supported by advancements in green technology, hydrogen fuel, and biofuels.
- Rising Middle Class and Urbanisation: The prime minister emphasized the emergence of a neo-middle class, with 25 crore people rising out of poverty in the past decade. This demographic shift is driving first-time vehicle purchases and expanding the market.
- Vehicle Scrapping Policy: PM Modi urged manufacturers to leverage the government’s vehicle scrapping policy and introduce incentive schemes to encourage the replacement of old vehicles.
- Foreign Investment: India’s auto sector attracted USD 36 billion in FDI over four years, with expectations of continued growth driven by technology transfer and global partnerships.
The Prime Minister credited the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for bolstering the auto sector, with sales exceeding ₹2.25 lakh crore and generating 1.5 lakh direct jobs. He noted that India’s automobile market, already the third-largest for passenger vehicles and the world’s largest for two-wheelers and tractors, is poised for further growth as the country advances to become one of the top three global economies.
