Exploring Power Systems Beyond Transport
The two companies will study the use of hydrogen-powered microgrids for areas such as data centres and remote locations. Ohmium will be handling system design and performance checks. Toyota will supply fuel cell modules and provide integration support. The project is expected to create systems that can be used in different locations and conditions.
In Line with India’s Hydrogen Strategy
The collaboration supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which started in 2023. The mission encourages the use of hydrogen for energy independence by 2047 and net zero emissions by 2070. The goal is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels across sectors.
Manasi Tata, Vice Chairperson - Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “At Toyota, our commitment to a carbon-neutral future extends beyond clean mobility. Green hydrogen is a vital part of this vision—not only for transportation but also its production, distribution, and diverse end-use applications. Through this collaboration with an innovative PEM technology player like Ohmium, we are not only advancing Hydrogen applications but also reinforcing our support for the country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. By co-developing locally relevant hydrogen solutions, we aim to empower India’s energy transformation and contribute meaningfully to the hydrogen ecosystem.”
Toyota’s Past Hydrogen Projects in India
Toyota began working with hydrogen in India through a pilot with the Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle in 2022. The project was conducted with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT). Toyota has also supplied fuel cell modules to Ashok Leyland for vehicle development and carried out a study with the Government of Kerala.
Moving Toward Stationary Hydrogen Applications
The new agreement with Ohmium shows Toyota’s shift toward stationary hydrogen power systems in India. It also reflects ongoing efforts to support hydrogen use across industries.
