Toyota Tsusho And LG Energy Solution Set Up Battery Recycling Joint Venture In USA

LG Energy Solution and Toyota Tsusho Corporation have established a new joint venture company called Green Metals Battery Innovations, LLC. The announcement was made following an agreement signed by LG Energy Solution Michigan and Toyota Tsusho America.

Upcoming Plant

The joint venture will build and operate a pre-processing facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The plant will carry out dismantling and shredding of battery production scrap to extract black mass, which contains nickel, cobalt and lithium.

Initial Operations & Supply

At the start of operations, LG Energy Solution will provide production scrap from electric vehicle battery manufacturing for Toyota Motor. The plant is scheduled to commence operations from 2026.

Processing Capacity

The planned facility will have a processing capacity of up to 13,500 tons of battery scrap per year. This quantity is equivalent to scrap generated from around 40,000 electric vehicle batteries.

Post-Processing & Material Recovery

The extracted black mass will be sent for post-processing to recover raw materials. The long-term goal is to create a closed-loop system in which recovered materials are reused in battery production.

Recycling Infrastructure Development

The joint venture is part of a broader plan to develop a battery recycling network in the region. Both companies are aiming to reduce waste and reuse materials through this facility and future projects.

Management’s Viewpoint

Chang Beom Kang, CSO of LG Energy Solution said, “This joint venture will not only help secure a stable supply of key battery materials but also enhance the competitiveness of our recycling business in North America. We are fully committed to leading the recycling market through innovative and differentiated technologies.”
Masaharu Katayama, COO of Toyota Tsusho said, “We are proud to partner with LG Energy Solution to advance the battery recycling infrastructure in North America.
