Triumph is set to expand its 400cc motorcycle range in India with the launch of the Bonneville 400 tomorrow, October 5. The modern retro roadster has already been spotted testing several times and is expected to bring a more traditional Bonneville-inspired design to the brand’s Bajaj-built motorcycle portfolio.
The Bonneville 400 is also one of four new motorcycles teased by Triumph ahead of its October 6 reveal. Here is what we expect from the upcoming motorcycle.
Key Highlights:
  • Triumph Bonneville 400 launch expected on October 5
  • 349cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine likely
  • Retro design inspired by the larger Bonneville T100 and T120
  • Expected to rival the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and Honda CB350

Triumph Bonneville 400: Expected Design

The Bonneville 400 is expected to stand apart from the existing Speed 400, Scrambler 400, Thruxton 400 and Tracker 400. Test mule images suggest that the motorcycle will feature a more traditional roadster design. It is expected to get a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, curved fenders, a flat bench-style seat, a round headlamp and a peashooter-style exhaust. Overall, the styling appears to draw heavily from the larger Bonneville T100 and T120.

Triumph Bonneville 400: Different Suspension Setup

One of the biggest differences could be the Bonneville 400's chassis and suspension setup. Unlike most motorcycles in Triumph's current 400cc range, the Bonneville 400 is expected to use conventional telescopic forks with gaiters at the front and twin rear shock absorbers.
The test bike also appears to feature a new chassis and swingarm. This setup should help give the motorcycle a more traditional riding character, in line with its retro styling.

Triumph Bonneville 400: Expected Engine

The motorcycle is expected to use a 349cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. While the exact specifications will be confirmed at launch, Triumph could use a relatively relaxed state of tune for the Bonneville 400.
The engine could be similar to the unit used in the Speed T4, which produces around 29bhp and 31Nm. A slightly less aggressive character would suit the Bonneville 400's positioning as a relaxed retro roadster.
With the Bonneville 400, Triumph is expected to enter the traditional retro roadster segment in India. This puts it directly against motorcycles such as the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Bullet 350 and Honda CB350.
More details on the motorcycle's features, specifications and pricing are expected to be revealed at the upcoming launch. Triumph's new Bonneville 400 could become an important addition to its 400cc range, especially for buyers looking for classic styling with modern mechanicals.
