Uber And Wayve To Begin Level 4 Autonomous Vehicle Trials In London

Uber and Wayve have announced plans to start Level 4 autonomous vehicle trials in London, marking Uber's first such initiative in the UK. These trials will utilize Wayve's AV2.0 technology, which adapts to various driving conditions without relying on detailed maps. The UK government is providing support for these self-driving pilots, aiming to streamline regulatory processes. Both companies aim to enhance autonomous vehicle adoption, with future expansions planned based on trial outcomes. Also, collaboration with relevant authorities will continue throughout the process.

Uber and Wayve have today announced that in collaboration both these companies are looking to commence trials of Level 4 autonomous vehicles in the UK. In this update it has come to light that these companies are planning to conduct public-road trials of Level 4 (L4) autonomous vehicles in London. It was also highlighted that this is the first such announcement from Uber for L4 vehicle testing in the UK. The trials aim to operate autonomous vehicles using Wayve’s technology on Uber’s mobility platform in an attempt to accelerate autonomous vehicle adoption in the region.

Government Support For Self-Driving Pilots

The trials are being launched following a new announcement by the UK Secretary of State for Transport, introducing a framework to support commercial self-driving pilots. Wayve and Uber will work with the UK Government and Transport for London to complete the regulatory and permitting process before the trials begin.
The companies have selected the UK as a test location due to differences in traffic rules, road layouts, and driving conditions compared to regions like the United States, where most L4 trials have taken place so far. Data gathered from UK operations will be used to develop autonomous driving systems for broader application.

Wayve AV2.0 Technology

Wayve will conduct the trials using its AV2.0 system. This approach does not depend on detailed digital maps or fixed driving instructions. Instead, the system is trained to operate across varied locations based on experience. Wayve recently tested this system by operating in multiple cities across Europe, North America and Japan.

Uber X Wayve

Wayve and Uber had earlier announced a multi-year partnership in 2024 to bring this system into vehicles operating on Uber’s platform. The next phase now involves operational trials in the UK. Additional information regarding the vehicle manufacturer involved and the timeline for trials will be shared later.

Management’s Viewpoint

Commenting on the occasion, Andrew Macdonald, President and Chief Operating Officer of Uber said, “We’re excited to take the next step in our journey with Wayve, bringing autonomous mobility to one of the world’s busiest and most complex urban environments. Wayve’s globally scalable AV2.0 approach makes them an ideal partner to bring Uber’s autonomous vision to reality in new cities around the world. Our vision is to make autonomy a safe and reliable option for riders everywhere, and this trial in London brings that future closer to reality.”
Alex Kendall, CEO and Co-founder of Wayve said, “This is a defining moment for UK autonomy. With Uber and a global OEM partner, we’re preparing to put our AI Driver technology into real service on the streets of London, delivering on our AV2.0 vision for scalable autonomy. We drove through Tokyo, Milan, and Montana—all with the same AI model. That’s the power of AV2.0. It’s what gives us the confidence to launch a driverless ride-hailing service with Uber, starting in London and expanding to other cities around the world.”
