UK Luxury Cars Like Rolls-Royce, Lotus To Get 90 Percent Import Duty Cut In India
India and the UK have finalised a free trade agreement that will significantly reduce tariffs on British-made vehicles entering India. The deal, announced on May 6, is expected to boost automotive trade between the two countries.
UK Luxury Cars Like Rolls-Royce, Lotus To Get 90 Percent Import Duty Cut In India
India and the United Kingdom have concluded negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which includes reduced tariffs on automotive products. The announcement was made jointly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on May 6.
Rolls-Royce, Lotus and Jaguar Land Rover Cars to get Cheaper
As part of the agreement, India will reduce import duties on British automobiles. The current tariff of over 100% on British cars will be lowered to 10%, but this is subject to an import quota. This move is likely to affect the pricing and availability of premium and luxury vehicles from the UK in the Indian market.
Key Highlights of the India-UK FTA:
- The FTA ensures comprehensive market access for goods, across all sectors, covering all of India’s export interests. India will gain from tariff elimination on about 99% of the tariff lines covering almost 100% of the trade value offering huge opportunities for increase in the bilateral trade between India and the UK.
- The FTA provides positive impact on manufacturing across labour and technology intensive sectors and opens up export opportunities for sectors such as textiles, marine products, leather, footwear, sports goods and toys, gems and jewellery and other important sectors such as engineering goods, auto parts and engines and organic chemicals.
- The FTA eases mobility for professionals including Contractual Service Suppliers; Business Visitors; Investors; Intra-Corporate Transferees; partners and dependent children of Intra-Corporate Transferees with right to work; and Independent Professionals like yoga instructors, musicians and chefs.
- India has ensured that non-tariff barriers are suitably addressed to ensure free flow of goods and services and that they do not create unjustified restrictions to India’s exports.
- The FTA seeks to promote good regulatory practices and enhance transparency that are in sync with India’s own focus on domestic reforms to enhance the ease of doing business.
Parliamentary Approval Pending
The agreement still requires formal approval from the UK Parliament. Legal text drafting and internal procedures are expected to take up to a year before the deal is implemented.
Automotive Trade Outlook
Once in effect, the FTA is projected to expand bilateral trade and improve market access for British car manufacturers in India. This may open up more opportunities for component suppliers and related services in the auto sector.
New Access for British Brands
This deal will likely open a new market for iconic British brands, by securing India’s best ever tariff offer and providing access to India’s growing middle-class consumer base. This access includes cutting tariffs on whiskies from 150% to 75% at entry into force, following to 40% after 10 years, as well as on other agri-food products such as soft drinks dropping from 33% to 0% after seven years, and lamb dropping from 33% to 0% at entry into force.
