Corporates And Fleet Owners To Prioritise 5-Star Rated Vehicles For Employee Safety: Global NCAP
At a workshop hosted by the Institute for Road Traffic Education (IRTE) in Faridabad, the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) recommended that corporate and fleet operators select vehicles with five-star safety ratings and follow UN vehicle safety standards.
David Ward, President Emeritus of the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP),
While addressing a conference David Ward, President Emeritus of the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP), highlighted the role of safer vehicles in reducing work-related road crashes. Ward urged corporates and fleet owners to select vehicles with Global NCAP’s five-star ratings and align with UN safety standards. He stated that careful vehicle selection, maintenance and driving practices are key to improving road safety and lowering operational risks.
Two-Wheeler Safety Measures Highlighted
Ward also spoke about the need for additional safety measures for two-wheelers, which account for about 44% of road deaths in India. He recommended the inclusion of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and blind spot detection systems in two-wheelers.
Ward pointed out that India currently mandates ABS for two-wheelers above 125cc but could extend this requirement to all motorised two-wheelers above 50cc. He said that ABS is effective in reducing crash risks and fatalities.
Call for Broader Safety Enforcement
The workshop addressed the importance of helmet standards, road design improvements, and the use of technology to protect two-wheeler riders. GNCAP continues to call for adherence to vehicle safety standards and enforcement actions to reduce traffic injuries and deaths.
David Ward, President Emeritus, Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP), said, “Work-related crashes cause a third of global road deaths, making driving one of the biggest risks for employees. To assist fleet managers in making safer vehicle purchasing decisions, Global NCAP has revised and further developed our FleetSafe guide. It reflects the latest thinking and recommendations on vehicle selection. Improved fleet selection and purchasing can contribute greatly to ensuring safer vehicles enter the fleet, safeguarding the health and well-being of employees and contribute to saving lives globally.”
