Ford Mustang Is Now Officially The Fastest American Car, Sets New Record At Nurburgring

American automaker Ford has officially announced that the Mustang GTD has recorded a lap time of 6:57.685 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany. This makes it the first American production car to complete this 20.8 km circuit in under seven minutes. This lap time was officially certified and it places the Mustang GTD among six production cars globally to achieve this feat, making it the fastest American car around the Nurburgring circuit.
The information shared by the company highlights that the record breaking Mustang was driven around the Nurburgring by Dirk Muller of Multimatic Motorsports. With this the Mustang has broken the previous fastest lap record set by the Dodge Viper ACR of 7:01.30. It also broke the record of the flamboyant Lamborghini Aventador SV of 6:59.73 set at this circuit. After Ford vs Ferrari this is yet another example of a Blue collared American car turning tables when put up against famous European sports cars (hypercars in this case).

Technical Configuration

The record breaking Ford Mustang GTD was equipped with a 5.2L supercharged V8 engine generating a peak power output of 815 bhp and 900 Nm of torque. It used a rear transaxle configuration to distribute weight evenly between the front and rear axles. It had a top speed of 325 kmph.
Key components of the vehicle include carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, and semi-active suspension. For compliance with Nurburgring’s regulations, the vehicle was fitted with a roll cage and a competition seat with a five-point harness.

Development Process

The development of the Mustang GTD involved adapting the Mustang GT3 race car for road use. The process included testing at multiple circuits, including Sebring in the United States and Nurburgring.
Watch the journey is documented in a film, The Road to the Ring, which details the steps taken by the team to prepare the car for this record attempt:
